Cool DIY Install VLED Triton Bulbs (Size #3157) for JGC 2011+ / WK2s with Pics

Before I start this easy, yet annoying DIY post you must know that I have both muffler resonators removed (straight pipe / muffler delete). This made the process a little easier for me due to space. Though I'm sure you will still be able to complete this following the directions below.

Here is what you need to order from VLEDs:

- 1 Pair 3157 RED (which is the TURN & BRAKE light) - "V3_R-C" = $110

- 1 Pair 3 PIN 12 INCH BASE ADAPTER TO CONTROL BOX EXTENSION WIRE - "V3_EXT_12_3" = $10

- 1 Pair 2 PIN 12 INCH BULB EXTENSION WIRE - "V3_EXT_12_2" = $10

Total = $130

FYI: When buying the 3157 bulb, you can select from White, Amber and Red. IMO, you should choose RED because the taillight housing is red. If you go with white, the bulbs will look Pink. If you go with Amber, the brake/turn will look orange; which you may want. However, brakes are always RED so keep that in mind.

Here is what you need to INSTALL the VLEDs:

1. A Flathead screw driver
2. A Philips screw driver (to install the vled bracket around the bulb)
3. 3M double sided tape (the strongest one)
4. Zip Ties (the long ones)
5. Pliers
6. Flashlight

----------------------------------

Putting the Bulbs Together (Follow this Video):

Summary:

1. All we need to use are the M3-4-MS screws (the longer ones)

2. When screwing them in, place 2 screws next to each other. Then the other 2 screws directly across. You'll see how they match the stock halogen bulb.

3. Use the thickest rubber grommet to help seal the bulb

4. Keep the bulb "adjustment" all the way back. There's no need to push it forward. Make sure the vled back is screwed on tight.

5. DON'T FORGET TO ADD THE FUSE TO THE HARNESS!!! OTHERWISE YOU'LL GET HYPERFLASHING. Fuse is included in the box.

Onto the installation....

Here is what you should have after watching the video above:

1. Top right arrow = fuse box. Don't forget about this!

2. Bottom left arrow = Plug for the STOCK rear/brake bulb. When you take the taillights apart, you'll be able to take the stock rear/break bulb out. When you do, remove the bulb and place the plug above into it (as if it was the bulb).

2a. I took electrical tape and wrapped it up to make sure no water or dirt would get into it. You'll see what I'm talking about when you get the tails apart.

--------------------------------------------

Use a flathead screw drive to pop off the 2 clips that hold the taillight on. Repeat for other side.

You'll now see why we ordered the wiring extensions! There is absolutely no room, except for the taillight itself... Crazy.

----------------------------------

Now, place the VLED into the housing with everything connected. We are doing this to TEST it before hooking everything up. We want to TEST it because the polarity of the turn signal matters. If the light doesn't go on, then you have to switch the turn signal socket the other way.

Notice how that's just not going to fit... Why? Because we have to plug the circled part where the OEM BULB went into. Remember I said we had to electrical tape it up?

edit: Make sure the lights turn on before taping it up! Otherwise you'll have to undo it all and reverse the polarity.

EXTENSIONS, EXTENSIONS, EXTENSIONS! Paying an additional $20 for extensions sucks but there's just no room so they are a must.

With everything working... You can disconnect the extension. You want to disconnect it in a way so that the wire is longest from the taillight because we drop the wiring down below through the rear bumper.

You can see my extensions in this picture:

When looking down, you'll be able to see the ground or the top of your exhaust.

Lastly, all you have to do is get under the truck and connect the LED ballast to the extensions. Just reach up and connect them.

I then placed zip ties around some parts for additional hold.

I placed the ballast right onto that metal frame. It stuck perfectly and it's holding on damn well. IF the double sided tape ever comes off, then the zip ties at least prevent it from falling onto the exhaust pipe or dangling around. I don't foresee any crazy amount of rain or dirt reaching this area but I guess time will tell.

The best way to install this would probably be to remove the rear bumper but I didn't want to risk scratching the paint or damaging anything.

Huge difference when compared to stock/halogen bulbs! I'll take more pictures at night to show how bright they are. Feel free post here or send me a PM if you have questions on installing these.

^^^There is no light on the tail gate...Atleast on the 2014+ there isn't. Just the LED running light. Interestingly enough, there is a bulb in there lol.

Great writeup Luxman! Basically exactly how I installed mine except I simply made my own extension to the bulb as I don't mind a little soldering and partially because I didn't even think of just buying extensions lol. I have the gen 2.5 kit so mine has a much smaller module box, but uses a separate resistor. I mounted the flat V3 resistor on top of the factory hitch which has a perfect metal "shelf" which is easily accessible.

The Triton V3 LED's are still IMO the absolute best plug and play LED kit available. Nothing compares to them. I have been running V3 Triton LED's now for years when they were first introduced and they have been flawless. I have owned gen 1, 2, and now 2.5 in my 2015 High Altitude. Love'em!

Your installation looks perfect, only thing I want to mention and it probably doesn't make much of a difference since the V3s are so bright, but based on one of the pictures that shows the back of the LED bulb, it appears you did not set the bulb length out to be approx the same length that the filament would be on the stock bulb. As I'm sure you are aware, you can rotate the V3 bulb in or out to change its length. They do this so you can set it correctly in the housing. I set the V3 "globe" lens out to the same length that the filament is on the stock bulb. I assume this would be taking advantage of the reflector housing the best.

I'm not sure what I'm confusing you about.
So just to try and clear things up here is how the lights work.

2011-2013:
NO LED running lights. Brake and turn signal are only on the outer housings. The liftgate only has a running light that does nothing more than burn steady when you put the parking or headlights on. All signaling is done by the outer housing bulb.

2014-2016:
Has LED running lights (that outer ring). Burns steady at all times when parking lights or headlights are on. ONLY the outer housing does brake and turn signaling same as the 2011-2013. The liftgate does nothing except have the LED running light. There is a bulb in there, but don't be fooled, it does nothing on domestic 2014-2016 WK2s.

Re: DIY Install VLED Triton Bulbs (Size #3157) for JGC 2011+ / WK2s with Pics

It could probably be done. It would just take a little wiring into the liftgate. You would also have to ensure that the socket is large enough to accept the V3 Triton bulb. I am not sure what bulb is just sitting in there.
Lastly, even though it would be cool, honestly, I think it would be too bright for the poor people sitting behind you at a stop light lol. Even just the outer V3 Triton by itself is pretty damn intense, I couldn't imagine another pair in there.
