DIY: Interior Trim Vinyl Wrap

Here is some info and photos on how to remove/wrap your interior trim – and YES you are able to remove just the trim pieces from the door and dash completely!

I would not call this an easy process so unless you have removed interior door panels etc and are comfortable doing so you may want to look into having someone else do it for you. That being said it’s also not that difficult if you take your time, know what you’re up against and are confident in your ability. I would rate it about a 7/10 difficulty and the total time was about 4.5 hours. It can definitely be done faster than that but I was going in blind and wanted to go slow and get it right. One cool feature of the vinyl is that it actually has tiny perforations in it that allow trapped air to come out through the material – this is vital as it makes the wrapping the parts without air bubbles MUCH easier.

** Important! ** - I do not think it’s possible to wrap the steering wheel due to the round barrel and curved edges so keep this in mind before you begin! I did not even attempt it so it may be possible. Instead I decided to order a limited steering wheel to completely get rid of the last bit of wood grain in the interior. It’s going to be a week or so till it gets here so I will post new pics of the 100% complete interior once I get that installed.

Items Required:
- Vinyl Wrap – I used 3M Scotchprint as it seems to be the most realistic CF offering out there
- Scissors
- SHARP utility knife
- Squeegee
- Hair Dryer
- Phillips Screwdriver
- T9 Torx screwdriver
- Tape Measure
- Sharpee
- Trim Removal Tools (If your lucky enough to have a set)
- 7mm socket with small extension and wratchet






Step one – Door Cards:
  • Using the trim removal guide on wk2jeeps.com carefully remove the door cards from the Jeep

  • On the back side of the card you will see 7 Phillips screws that need to be removed to release the trim from the door. See pic below for an idea of what you’re up against.
  • Once the trim is removed you need to clean it with a mild mix of water and dish soap to remove all oil and dirt from the trim piece. This will prevent dust/dirt bumps and will also allow the best adhesion.
  • Make sure you work out which way you want the lines going in the CF weave and then cut an oversized piece big enough to wrap the trim.
  • Peel the backing off the vinyl and then starting at one end start laying it down as flat as possible on the part. You are able to lift and replace the vinyl a few times if you need to but be aware that once you stretch the material around a corner/edge there is a good chance you will not be able to make any more adjustments as the vinyl does hold its shape once stretched.
  • Once you have the face of the part covered you can then trim back access material in order to make it easier to handle and work with. Be careful not to trim too close as you want it to completely wrap around the edges and have a small bit wrapped to the backside of the trim. Hard corners are tricky so I would suggest taking a small piece of vinyl and doing a few practice wraps to get a feel for the fabric before doing the final layup. This is where the hair dryer will really help out! As soon as you hit the fabric with the hair dryer (Medium Heat) it becomes noticeably more pliable and will let you properly cover the weird contours (esp on the dash bits).
  • Once the part is wrapped to your liking then go ahead and re-install it onto the card and then back into the truck.
Step Two – Dash Trim:
  • This is where things get a little more difficult. To remove the dash trim pieces you need to remove the centre radio/temp control/air vent assembly. This can be done by opening the cubby hole below, grabbing on with your hands and then giving it a firm pull. I thought I was going to snap the trim because it took some force to get it to pop – but once it did you just carefully work your way up the sides and to the top until it come free completely.
  • Once you have the assembly removed you will see one 8mm bolt holding the trim around the start button. Once that’s removed it should pop out easily.
  • Next, do the same for the other single bolt holding the long trim piece to the right of the radio. Once that bolt is removed carefully pull the part away from the dash (it’s held in by clips but them pop out easily). Note that you will also be removing just the trim surround of the air vent near the door as well. This is held in by 4 little grey tabs (2 on either side) that clip onto the vent itself almost like an oversized version of an electrical harness plug.
  • Now that you the trim/vent piece removed you will see two small silver T9 torx screws holding the chrome vent trim to the wood grain trim piece. Remove the screws and then the trim leaving just the part you want to wrap.
  • Wrap both parts as per instructions above. For the hole where the push button goes I used the exacto knife to cut a small cross into the centre of the hole, then cut each of the four segments in half again making it easier to wrap the contours of the hole. That along with the hair dryer worked great and it came out perfect.
*** Edit: You may be able to skip the next 3 steps by just snapping out the trim ring around the steering column to get at the trim bolt that way instead of removing the lower cover and side kick panel ***
  • The most time consuming part of the trim removal is the piece to the left of the steering wheel. You need to first remove the cover on the underside of the dash that holds the little interior foot well light. This is held on by one of those push type fasteners so just pull down slightly and wiggle it a bit and it should pop free.
  • Once the panel is removed you need to take out the 4 screws securing the lower half of the dash.
  • Next remove the kick panel down where your left foot would sit. You may have to pull the weather stripping back a bit to get this guy out.
  • Do the same for the access panel on the extreme left of the dash (upper section that you can’t see when the door is closed)
  • You should now be able to see the single bolt holding the trim piece onto the dash. Remove the bolt and then once again carefully unclip the chrome trim attached to the vent. Remove vent trim with 2 torx screws on back as before.
  • Again, clean all the parts and then proceed to wrap.
  • Reassemble all parts back into the Jeep.
  • Chug a beer, then sit and admire your sweet new interior

Final Thoughts: I am really happy with how things turned out! Everything looks great and I doubt anyone getting into the vehicle could even tell that it did not come like that from the factory. I know some people are probably shaking their heads as to why I would go to all this trouble but for me I just could not stand the orange`ish wood grain trim.

So I live in Vancouver too and I hate the orange wood as much as you do. I have absolutely no experience removing trim or working on my car like you. How much would you charge to do this for me? From what I gather, material cost is very low and it's just labor.

I have a limited so I don't need to worry about the steering wheel like you do.

Hey DG,

I'm not sure how comfortable I would be tearing apart some else's interior. I also don't have a whole lot of free time at the moment (thus the 2am install). I would suggest talking to a local graphics company that does vinyl wrapping - like you said the material cost is fairly minimal. I spent about $80 on the 3M stuff and it was twice the price of other generic wraps.

I'd guess that is just the reflection off the flash as the chrome frame angles the wrap, and that the 3M material is not porous enough to show material beneath.

604 will obviously need to confirm either way.

Hot damn that looks sharp. Maybe we can just bolt on the SRT8 steering wheel and drop the 6.4L in the engine bay too?

The chrome strip on the trim is slightly raised so my crappy shop light/camera flash are making it stand out a lot more than it does to the naked eye. It's actually very subtle and looks great in person - better than completely flat would IMO. I hope to have better pics for everyone soon.
