Dual Battery Options?

Hi, I have a 2013 Grand Cherokee and am planning a trip next year through to Alice towing my camper trailer. Want to explore Dual Battery options and am getting varying information. Options appear to be:
  • Dual Battery install but some outlets wont do them e.g. ARB issues with mounting the unit inside vehicle and delicate power supply?
  • Portable system e.g. Thumper / Baintech Power Top
What are others using that works well?
Thanks in advance, Scott

Re: Dual Battery Options?

Guess that really depends on your specific needs.

Personally I would prefer to have the extra weight of the spare battery out on the trailer (so you aren't hauling it around when you don't need to), but then you have to consider a way to charge it.

Whereas an on-board battery (to the Jeep that is) could be charged by the vehicle charging system.

If you have a 7 pin trailer connector, you could probably use the 12v power pin to charge the battery on the camper when towing.

You could also look into solar panels to charge the batter if it is mounted in/on the camper.

You might also look into one of the new LiIon jump packs for your Jeep as yet a 3rd battery just to be safe if you accidentally drain your Jeep battery too low to start the engine.

I've got a V6 in my Jeep and on my boat and the LiIon jump pack I have is smaller than a paperback book and comes with it's own carry case (to hold the cables) and in total is about the size of a thin hard cover book.

Re: Dual Battery Options?

Hi Scott
Dual battery systems in the WK2 are definitely doable, you could go over to the export section where the Aussies hang out and search dual batteries there, or the Towing thread. Lots of info.
I made a decision not to carry a second battery all the time, it goes in when the fridge is loaded when travelling.
I made up a false floor that fitted the load area and mounted an 80ah AGM in a battery box - this is fixed to the false floor behind the fridge. An Engel 40l and the battery will just fit in line behind the rear seat.
Tables and chairs and a storage drawer all fit onto the false floor- takes only minutes to install or remove the lot.
I used a Piranha 140a isolator mounted down beside the main battery and 6 B&S cable with an Anderson plug to connect to the battery. I can either connect direct or via a 12v DC to DC charger mounted on top of the battery. Using the DC/DC charger will eliminate any issues with the charging regime of the main system.
This has worked well for us for three years and 85000K, I wouldn't change anything if I did it all again.
Good luck with your trip, it will be great.
John

Re: Dual Battery Options?

I also installed a permanent dual battery in my diesel Overland to power my ARB fridge. I did a brief write up and posted some pictures here: GC-12 volt outlet in rear quarter panel
