Front and rear diff fluid change

Anyone attempted to change different fluid on 2011 yet? Mine has QD2 with limited slip so.I.know it needs additive. Are they any different to drain than solid axle style?

Re: Front and rear diff fluid change

I haven't done it yet due to the mileage not being there yet. I have done it on previous trucks that I have owned. I would recommend "Royal Purple" or "Amsoil" as a brand of diff lube. I had no problems using these lubes and they already have the limited slip additive in it. They cost a bit more but you get what you pay for.

Re: Front and rear diff fluid change

I wanted to bump this up.
I am at the point where its time to do this, but after crawling under the truck I can't see a drain plug or fill hole anywhere on the casing.

Jeep wants $267 for front and rear service which I think it robbery, I have done the axle service on my other grand cerokee's for years and it's never been hard.

I just can't fing the fill and drain on them.

Im changing to Quantum Blue.. Its a custom blend by BNDAutomotive and is highly recommend. Mopar actually says that these fluids are lifetime, but considering these diffs were once new... Your going to have some break-in wear and considering there is no filter on the diffs, why wouldn't people change the fluid? You'll get more then you need as they are sold in 1 gallon containers but comes with the proper additive for the rear if you have ELSD which is 75w/90 and then you'll need 75w/140 for the front. If you tow a lot they recommend 75w/115 for the rear with additive. http://www.bndautomotive.com/page/page/929427.htm

Regarding the plugs, I haven't looked myself yet, but came across this Mercedes video which might help? Should be the same, but might be driver side vs passenger side...

EDIT: I just ran outside and looked under with a flashlight. It sure looks like the drain plug is bottom right and the fill plug is top left. This is looking at the diff from the rear of the vehicle... Can't check the front at the moment. The drain plug is definitely bottom right though, its looks like a giant set screw, probably fits a 3/8 or 1/2 drive ratchet.

Re: Front and rear diff fluid change

thanks for the info. I'm going to get under it again this weekend and take a look. The other issue is that it says you Must use Mopars diff fluid for ESLD. Not sure what could be so different about it? Very expensive though.

Re: Front and rear diff fluid change

Did the diff service this weekend; the fluid for the quadra drive 2 230 mm axle w/ELSD is about $57 per qt. I asked what was so special about it, of course they didn't know. But gave me the reason that if I used something else it could cancel warranty. I will say it is different than most diff fluids I have used. Smells different, feels different. I can't say what the reason is for price other than Mopar. I sided with caution, they gave me a $7.00 per qt. discount which helped.

Very easy to change fluid, drain is at back bottom hex bolt. Fill is drivers side mid way up center of body. Bolts came loose very easily. I would never pay anyone to do this, it's very easy. Much easier than the old dana 35, 44's where you had to remove several bolts to completly change fluid.

Thanks for the update- How did the oil look coming out of the diff, compared to what you put in?

Thats what it looked like regarding the drain/fill. Does that also go for the front diff? How did you fill, did you buy a pump or does the mopar come in a special qt? 57 a quart is very steep considering you need a little under 2 qts to fill it I believe. They cant cancel the warranty, only scare you into buying the Mopar. As long as you use one that is approved they would have to prove the fluid caused the malfunction in the diff, which is unlikely the fluid will ever cause an issue especially when purchased from a large named company.

For future reference, Amsoil makes an oil for the front/rear diffs which is recommended by Amsoil. *You can search by year/make/model. Based on what I have read, AMSOIL is one of the few companies with a written warranty, and if the malfunction is caused due to their oil, they will fix/repair/replace the item which malfunctioned if I am not mistaken. It states under the product "AMSOIL Severe Gear is compatible with most limited-slip differentials. If limited-slip differential chatter occurs, add AMSOIL Slip-Lock™ friction modifier additive." On other Jeep Forums I have read of people using Amsoil and Redline without having to add friction modifier as it comes with some in it. People using royal purple did have to add friction modifier.

This is what they recommend for the rear and its only ~16 a quart- http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/svg.aspx
This is what they recommend for the front- http://www.amsoil.com/catalog.aspx?code=SVOQT-EA

Thanks again for the info

Re: Front and rear diff fluid change

Can you post the part #'s for the two different types of diff fluid you purchased from the dealership? I'd like to try to research them specifically a little more.

This is what I found in the manual...

Axle Differential (Front-Rear)

MOPAR Synthetic Gear & Axle Lubricant SAE 75W-140 (API-GL5) or
equivalent with friction modifier additive.

Axle Differential (Rear) – 5.7L Engine
With Electronic Limited-Slip
Differential (ELSD)

MOPAR Synthetic Gear & Axle Lubricant SAE 75W-90 (API-GL5) or
equivalent.

Axle Differential (Rear) – 5.7L Engine
Without Electronic Limited-Slip
Differential (ELSD)

MOPAR Synthetic Gear & Axle Lubricant SAE 75W-85 (API-GL5) or
equivalent.

So it says Mopar or equivalent. It also shows the additive in the FRONT diff, not the rear. The rear w/wo ELSD is the difference between 75w/90 and 75w/85

Else my owners manual is incorrect...?

Re: Front and rear diff fluid change

This is what I found, parts guy took my vin and came back with 2 qts of 68083381AA. For rear w/ELSD.

Fluid was dark/black when drainded, fluid in the bottle is nearly clear. I tow so I changed mine early at 23K miles. Rear holds 1 and 1/4 bottles.

Used flexable screw on tube I bought at Walmart to fill, worked great.

Re: Front and rear diff fluid change

you can get royal purple at advance auto for $21/qt and use the big30 code for $30 off your order. then just buy some additive for the elsd, the modifier in royal purple is not enough.

Thank you.

Where did you pull the data from above? The front diff from all my reading, as well as the user manual and also other oil websites (amsoil, royal purple) is 75w/140. The info above looks like info I've seen on wk2jeeps.com which I think is not accurate.

Check out this thread below... Concerning this issue from last year. The user manual has been updated.. Possibly that info on wk2jeeps is before any updates of production. I dont know which is right..

http://jeepgarage.org/showthread.php?t=17433

To clarify, when you went to the dealer, they gave you two quarts of diff lube based on your vin, I assume you only changed the rear?
