Re: Front exterior door handle replacement guide

I have a 2011... and my clips holding the window to the resonator look completely different. Also regardless where the window is I can't see It from the speaker hole or the other cutout... is the process of removing the window different?

Re: Front exterior door handle replacement guide

Well first off I want to say thanks to Jaxon217 for starting the thread so that we can all change the front door handles ourselves.

I have one hack for future members. I drilled a 7/8 access hole in the door panel to get to the front bolt. Lowes sells 7/8 flush plugs that snapped right in the hole to re-finish the panel. This was much easier than trying to access the bolt from the top.

Also I pre-threaded the new door handles which makes it much easier to start the bolts once you install the handles.

You do not have to un-hook the key cylinder rod on the drivers side front door! Just leave that one attached.

Also you need a pair of pliers like ddb1 has in his pics! You use them to unhook the electrical connection on the door handles!

Also I found it much easier to release the aft window release first. Grab the top of the glass depress the release and then depress the front one. If you have an extra set of hands available to hold the glass here is the time to use them!!

Re: Front exterior door handle replacement guide

so i finished my fronts today. here are some pics of mine.

I went ahead and removed the chrome strip because it gives you more space to work with.

I also attached a pic that shows the tab that you need to press forward to release the window. I was not sure which one it was. I know the pics are posted on the first page but I was just not sure once i opened it up. The pic shows a screw driver through the small hole where the tab is. Removing the window was WAY easier than expected.

Another pic also shows the screw that you can't see. Unless you drill a hole like another poster did. I was able to remove it with a 1/4" wrench and extended bit.

Re: Front exterior door handle replacement guide

Holy Mother of Gawd. Everything went fine until the driver's side handle. Used like 6 layers of painter's tape. Bastard would not come out. Turns out on this side they left me zero slack in the electrical line so I could disconnect the plug from the outside. Ended up breaking the little arm on the original handle and putting a cut in the paint (even with all the tape).
At least the nick is right along the edge of the handle so it won't really be noticeable with a touch up pen job.

Re: Front exterior door handle replacement guide

Ok, so I knocked out the rears pretty easily, and got the front door apart and the glass out with no issues, but having concerns with the bolts on the front. In the rears I was able to reach them by hand to remove and then start them again on the new handles, but the front's aren't as accessible, and I'm worried about dropping a bolt down into the interior of the door. How have people handled this? Magnetic sockets?

I was able to position the bolt into each hole by coming up through the flip cover opening with my arm and the bolt resting in the socket. Then, with the bolt resting in the hole (but not started), I handed the socket to my other arm through the window opening on the top side. From there I had just enough wrench to tighten the bolt. I had one of those magnetic extension sticks and it was easy to pick up one I dropped.

Re: Front exterior door handle replacement guide

Just installed my OEM door handles today. The fronts were a PITA. Starting the front bolt can be a bit challenging. I unbolted the door liner bolts just so I could barely squeeze my hand/arm in between door liner and door to start the front bolt. I'd suggest having a long handle socket wrench of some sort like one previously mentioned. I used a Harbor Freight long hand flex head socket wrench.
