Re: Frustated by MOPAR supply chain/Rock Rails

Still waiting, shop probably 3 hours into rock rail install. Owner of dealership let me use his personal Call of Duty Wrangler Unlimited as a loaner, nice perk! I passed on some install tips from this forum to master tech performing installation.

Further details coming later.

Re: Frustated by MOPAR supply chain/Rock Rails

6 hr job. Don't rush them on cutting the old sill that caps the front or it will look like crap. I don't know why they didn't include a cap for that price. I probably spent an hour cutting and filing it alone but am happy with the results. You'll be happy you waited and didn't go with the RRs. Don't forget some tips, this is the tips section.

Re: Frustated by MOPAR supply chain/Rock Rails

So far this job has turned into a nightmare. I spent over 10 hours at the dealership and the job is still not close to being finished.

The rails did not align, the master tech was 1/4" off some of the holes and it didn't look straight. The flanges near the wheel wells were so far off. The technician was complaining about the alignment on the passenger side, he really struggled with that. I got sent home without my Jeep - with a car nearly empty on gas. Got 20 miles down the road and realized it, and I called their service dept. and told them the whole project had turned into a nightmare.

The dealership is open until noon Saturday, and thinking it will be a miracle if they finish the job properly.

Re: Frustated by MOPAR supply chain/Rock Rails

That's to bad. I've been waiting to see how it turned out. Many of the installs by non-master techs on this and the other forum were 6hrs or less. Mine included. They shouldn't scratch on wood blocks. They're rock rails but it would be nice to get them home from the dealership without a blemish. Keep us posted.

Re: Frustated by MOPAR supply chain/Rock Rails

I received a call at 830 AM this morning, informing me the rock rails were done. After the nearly one hour drive to the dealership, I closely inspected the work. Everything was aligned properly and the rails were tight.

The technician was probably there until almost midnight last night & he worked for probably at least 12 hours alone on installing the rock rails. He was having problems getting the holes aligned to install them - he told me this morning he started on the front on the passenger side, then worked his way down the rail and got it finally aligned that way. We think it may be because of MOPAR sourcing a new supplier as to why it was such a difficult installation.

I created a photo album of different angle views of the rock rails, link below:

Re: Frustated by MOPAR supply chain/Rock Rails

Thanks for the update. Glad they were able to finally get them on, sounds like a pain the he a$$. I'm going to call the dealer in my area to see how much they would charge me. Would these fit on the MY14? Pictures looks great and really add to the looks of the Jeep Did they still charge you the same price for labor that they quoted prior to the install? From the pictures it looks like they stick out far enough to act as running boards too? How do you like them so far?

Well after waiting as long as you did for them an extra day for an install isn't that bad. Hope you like them after all that.

Re: Frustated by MOPAR supply chain/Rock Rails

blum3416 - I paid $ 157.50 for labor on the rock rails, and $ 868.00 for the rock rails themselves - grand total $1025.00.

The dealership is applying a TSB from 11/21/2012 on a hood hinge pin, so I have to go back on Thursday to get the new window cowling molding and the new hinge pin installed. Also, my molded splash guards in the front wheel wells would not fit, so ordered some flat ones with Jeep logo in white.

I believe they will fit on the MY14's as the chassis has not changed - or you could go with the Trailhawk rails which cost more and are not as sturdy.

For impressions - I like how the rails lower the CG, and they look great. Easy to step on for reaching onto the roof or washing windows, etc. I looked for some non-skid tape when I got back into town but didn't find any yet. My plan is to put some onto the rails so when they are wet or icy, slipping isn't as much of an issue. Another thing I may look into is coating them with something like Rhino linings tuff grip or similar product.

Re: Frustated by MOPAR supply chain/Rock Rails

3M makes good industrial grip tape for stairs and landings, I used it on my Teraflex rock sliders on my JK. It's been on there over 4 years.

Where can I pick up the 3M tape? Any ideas? That sounds good to me.
