FYI...When to change your oil............

Apparently 10k miles is the norm these days. My 2013 VW had free maintenance, they wanted to see it at 5k mi for inspection and oil change at 10k. Same exact thing with my 2014 Lexus, except the maintenance wasn't free lol

With my brother's new Tahoe, it comes with free maintenance for 2 years or 24k mi, they won't change it until the vehicle says so. I believe it started saying it needed changed at 9k mi.

So waiting until 10k doesn't seem to be unheard of or bad for newer cars. I still can't wrap my head around it, but it's industry wide so there's no reason to not imo.

I used nothing but synthetic oils every 5000 miles in my 2000 WJ 4.7L and got 200000 miles out of the engine before it blew a head gasket...

When I bought the diesel, I got a lifetime oil change package through the dealer, and they'll do 4 changes a year based on doing an oil change every 3000 miles and driving 12000 miles a year.

The diesel spec oil is synthetic, so I plan on changing every 5000 miles, which will be about 4 changes a year at the rate I'm putting miles on the Jeep right now.

I've only used synthetic on my past LS1 and L99's engines.
I use Synthetic for three reasons.

  • The first is that I live in the Northeast, which means large temperature swings between below freezing during the winter and over 80 degrees during the summer.
  • The second is that I spend time during my commute in stop-n-go traffic, a bit harder on the engine than cruisin' down the highway.
  • The third is that I believe that synthetic oil is more likely to extend the life of my engine and I plan on keeping the Jeep for at least 10 years.
