H11 to H9 Bulb Conversion

Apologize if this has been posted before but I searched and couldn't find it if it has.

For those of us who have the halogens and don't want to make the jump to HID here's how I did the H9 bulb conversion. I got all the instructions I needed from google.

I tried a set of H11 Sylvania SilverStars and I was really disappointed in them. Then I read up online that H11 bulbs can be swapped with H9 bulbs. Unfortunately no one makes a white bulb in H9 (except cheap ebay bluish ones which I won't waste my $$$ on). However all I've read online says that the Osram H9 bulb is more then adequate. What makes them brighter is the bulb filament type and the fact that they run at 65w rather then 55w. Yes they will run hotter but everyone states that you're looking at a 5-10 deg Celsius increase of heat at the harness. I was only able to test with one of those laser temp guns I bought at Canadian Tire to check for temp leaks around my home windows. With the headlights on for about 5minutes my temp gun was reading an increase in 6deg Celsius. There are harnesses you can buy that extend your current harness. Basically an H11 to H11 ceramic harness. I didn't buy them and I'm fine after 2 weeks.

You can see below in my comparison the H9 bulbs are much brighter. I realized I should've backed up a little more for a better comparison.

*FYI, never touch the bulbs with your fingers. The oils and dirt on your fingers will drastically reduce the lifespan of your bulbs.

1)First you will need to remove the additional tab inside the H9 bulbs housing. I did this using a set of cutters and mini chisel set I found out princess auto for $2

2)The H9 and H11 mounting tabs are slightly different. I highlighted the area in red on the H9 bulb that you will need to trim off with a set of cutters

3)Mount and enjoy!

Re: H11 to H9 Bulb Conversion

I'm looking to do this same project with my 2011 WK2. How are they working a couple months down the road? Did you immediately notice a significant increase in brightness? Thanks for the help and great writeup!
