Thanks. Just wondering , because I know people like to see a paper trail with the maintenance on vehicles so I wanted to know. I just got my JGC and I plan on switching to synthetic with the next oil change.

Re: How many have switched to a full synthetic oil?

I'm thinking of switching to synthetic oil as my first change is about due. Couple of questions.

I put very little mileage on my vehicle ( 7000 miles a year ) therefore I change my oil every 6 months rather than changing according to mileage.

Since this is the case , is it worth changing over to synthetic since I don't need the extra mileage between changes that synthetic provides ?

If I do switch could I just change the oil once a year rather than twice a year with regular oil?

Re: How many have switched to a full synthetic oil?

Per the owner's manual, you can go 12 months with regular oil as long as the onboard oil minder doesn't call for it sooner.

Changing it more often than called for might make you feel better, but not your engine.

But, advertising of synthetics has been very successful, so many will disagree.

Good luck with that.

Over time oil gets dirty, the viscosity breaks down, and your engine accumulates water through condensation...which can cause sludge.

Don't you think the engineers thought about that, and did some testing, before they came up with their recommendations?

I haven't seen too many complaints about sludge since they came up with the pcv back in the '60s or 70s. Those that had problems didn't think to change the valve.

According to the folks who designed your engine and have to pay for repairs for the warranty duration, you don't need to use either synthetic or change your oil more
often than every 12 months or 10K miles.

From there all remaining questions will result in a lot of noise, opinion, bluster, all pretty much totally unsupported by factual or engineering information.

The 7K miles isn't as important as the nature of those miles.
Short, infrequent trips particularly at low speed can be as big an oil killer as hard use, possibly moreso when the oil doesn't get hot enough to help it get rid of moisture, etc. Heavy pulling, dirty environments, saving $5 bucks on filters can also make the shorter interval a good idea.

Having said that, totally unbacked by any sound engineering information, I use full synth and converted at about 5500 miles to it, and plan to change at 5-6 K intervals or twice a year for my entire ownership of the vehicle.

Chrysler engineers? They couldn't even get the outside temperature reading right. So I would say no.

I have seen first hand the sludge build-up in cars less than 10 years old when taking off the valve covers (foreign & domestic) from owners who waited a year or more to change their oil. Hell my 2012 STI would get a white/milky coating on the oil filler tube & cap after 4000 miles.

Re: How many have switched to a full synthetic oil?

I spend some time online trying to find out which oil was best for my 3.6L 5W-30. I swear I have a headache now. My truck has 55k miles and I want to keep it for a long time, so it's time to make a final decision and stick with it. I tried Royal Purple before and it ran better than Mobil 1, Valvoline, etc., but I changed back to Mobil 1 after noticing it was burning oil. There are so many mixed reviews out there that it gets confusing. For now I'm sticking with Mobil 1, and Mobil 1 high mileage on my wife's sedan (got rid of the valve tick). But I have to say when I tried Royal Purple I got 26mpg highway and it ran as smooth as it ever had before including idle. I stick with 5-6k miles change. I'm trying to decide whether or not to try Redline, or try Royal Purple again and hope it will get used to it and stop burning it. Several of the Mobil 1 tests I read online weren't too positive.

I wouldn't worry too much about the Mobil 1 if you change your oil/filter every 5000 miles. You'll be paying almost twice as much buying the Redline oil...overkill IMO for 5000 mile changes.

That's what I thought when I switched back. Thanks.
