How many have switched to a full synthetic oil?

Like the title says- How many have switched to a full synthetic oil?

If so, when did you do so and who did you switch to? Did it help reduce the "hemi tick"

  • Yes
  • 1500 miles
  • Mobil1 5w-20
  • Not really, but that wasn't the reason I switched.

Thanks for the replies so far. Whats your reasoning behind going to Amsoil for every 3rd change?

Re: How many have switched to a full synthetic oil?

Yes, switched to Mobil 1 at first oil change circa 3k miles, don't think I've ever had the hemi tick but if so just cannot hear it over the stereo or Borlas.

There are more passionate and sometimes violent debates over oil than most any other car topic. Regardless, my Chryco service guy (whom I love), noted that despite the fact that Chryco specs non-synthetic oils for the Hemi, he uses synthetic in his personal 5.7L and recommends it to others.

Re: How many have switched to a full synthetic oil?

I plan on switching to syn after the first couple of oil changes. I just bought mine the other day but my owners manual came with a yellow paper insert that says if I do use synthetic to use 0W-30. I don't know if this is new news or not but my Laredo has a December 2011 build date.

That would be new news to me at least.. Its been under the impression, that 5w-20 is the weight due to mds.

Re: How many have switched to a full synthetic oil?

Bought my WK2 at the end of Feb 2011. I ran the stock oil for about a month(~300 miles). I then switched over to Pennzoil Ultra 5W-30 until November 2011. I changed over to Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W-30 for the winter. Planning on going back to Pennzoil Ultra 5W-30 in April

Re: How many have switched to a full synthetic oil?

Since the V6 doesn't have MDS, oil requirements are apparently different than those for the hemi.

Re: How many have switched to a full synthetic oil?

ONLY 5w 20 for the HEMI. I switched to Mobil 1 full sythetic 5w 20 and a Mopar oil filter at 3250 miles. I'm at 4000 miles now. I don't hear a hemi tick. I don't think I ever did though. I think it seems to start quicker and smoother and accelerate and shift better too, but that might just be a placebo effect.

Anyone know how many miles or months we can go with full sythetic in the Hemi? I think it's every 6 months to keep the warranty in tact. But, I'm thinking you should be able to go for a year with full synthetic (if the warranty wasn't a concern). Assuming you only drive 12,000 miles a year.

Service Department that did this full synthetic oil change told me they couldn't tell me how long I could go because the manual is only regarding semi-synthetic, but said Porsche's with full synthetic oil can go for over a year.

6 months or 8,000 miles is what the manual recommends. However mobil 1 full sythetic starts to be not as effective after about 5,000 miles. I have learned a lot of info in the past week from BNDAutomotive. They custom blend lubricants for all applications and have some of the best stuff out there. It also isn't just he says, she says, they have quite a bit of factual charts by lab testing to go along with their product. BNDAutomotive can safely go 12,000 miles per the lab tests, but they recommend it for at least 10,000.

Heres a lot of info, but take the time to examine it. I am not trying to sell a product, just trying to educate what I have learned this week, which has been a bunch. Below the RED line is a copy and paste from Brian (BNDAutomotive) post. Its a Mopar 5w/20 vs Quantum Blue 7.5/23. Why the difference in numbers? Mopar/Mobil 1 etc are not exactly 5w/20 they can and do range in centerpoise between 5.60 to 9.29.. Quantum Blue narrows it down to what your getting, as they break it down finer and add the individual numbers as it gets towards the next number.
QuantumBlue is an API rated oil at ILSAC GF-4 and for the 7.5w23, ILSAC GF-5. Less discrepancy than typical SAE scales let other MFRs of oil get away with etc.

THE INFO BELOW THIS MARK IS NOT MY OWN AND I HAVE COPY AND PASTED IT. I HAVE ALSO ATTACHED A LAB SAMPLE FROM A 4,900 MILE OIL CHANGE OF MOBIL 1 PROVIDED BY BRIAN THAT ONE CAN USE TO COMPARE TO THE MOPAR OIL AND QUANTUM BLUE OIL.

We just received another oil analysis that I thought was worth posting as it compares the dealership 5w20 "Mopar" oil vs our QuantumBlue 7.5w23

This customer, who has a 2006 Charger Daytona R/T, started out using just ACES IV, and then went to the differential fluid, then transmission fluid and filter, and then recently the 7.5w23 QuantumBlue HP Competition Formula 5.7L MDS Hemi Custom Blend. So this evaluation is not completely fair to us as the Mopar oil still has ACES IV helping reduce wear up top, but it is still a good example!

Here is the oil sample of just the Mopar oil. In both samples, the same engine was used and was driven the same way!

The Mopar 5w20 oil was run for 3,592 miles. The car had 65361 miles on the engine at the end of the Mopar oil sample.

As you can see:

Iron @ 5 ppm

Chromium @ 1 ppm

Lead @ 1ppm

Copper @ 8 ppm

Aluminum @ 3ppm

Vandium @ 1 ppm

To understand the wear on this, you have to divide the numbers by the amount of miles in 1000's. So:

Iron @ 5 ppm Div by 3.592 = 1.27 ppm per 1000 miles

Chromium @ 1 ppm Div by 3.592 = .278 ppm per 1000 miles

Lead @ 1ppm Div by 3.592 = .278 ppm per 1000 miles

Copper @ 8 ppm Div by 3.592 = 2.23 ppm per 1000 miles

Aluminum @ 3ppm Div by 3.592 = .835 ppm per 1000 miles

Vandium @ 1 ppm Div by 3.592 = .278 ppm per 1000 miles.

Now comparing the QuantumBlue 7.5w23 @ 11,112 miles:

Iron @ 7ppm

Chromium @ 0 ppm

Lead @ 0 ppm

Copper @ 12 ppm

Aluminum @ 1 ppm

Vanadium @ 0 ppm

To understand the wear on this, you have to divide the numbers by the amount of miles in 1000's. So:

Iron @ 7ppm Div by 11.112 = .63 ppm per 1000 miles

Chromium @ 0 ppm - can't be divided.....no wear!

Lead @ 0 ppm - can't be divided ......no wear!

Copper @ 12 ppm Div by 11.112 = 1.079 ppm per 1000 miles

Aluminum @ 1 ppm Div by 11.112 = .09 ppm per 1000 miles

Vanadium @ 0 ppm - can't be divided ......no wear!

On the surface, they seem about the same until you realize that the QuantumBlue went 3.09 times longer than the Mopar oil did.

When you put the total numbers together, this is what you end up with:

Iron 1.27 ppm per 1000 minus .63 ppm per 1000 QB div by 1.27 = 50.3% reduction in wear while 3X longer drain interval!

Chromium @ 100% less with 3x longer

Lead @ 100% less with 3x longer

Copper is 2.23 minus 1.07= 1.16 div by 2.23 = 52% less per 1000 miles @ 3x longer drain interval!

Aluminum is 66% less at 3x longer drain interval

Vandium is 100% less with 3x longer drain interval.

Thanks for all of that information. The service department did note 5,000 miles for next oil change so maybe they know something too.
