How to get switched 12V 20A switched power for Accessories

I had this buried in the BlackVue camera thread and thought it deserved it's own thread.

Note in the photos below I get my ground on the right side of the glove box because that's where my core device is. You can tap the black wire on cigarette lighter connector for a ground. Or find a good grounding bolt. Sometimes it's not easy finding a true grounded screw to the body-ground.

Put Seat all the way back

Lift the center console just a little bit. Pops right up.

Start pulling out the side console panel from the front bottom

The top is hooked into the side. If side panel is stuck here just lift on the top cover a little more. No need to force anything.

Side cover removed

You can see the tap on the upper right. One of those 3M Taps you just squeeze on. You tap the Pink wire with yellow stripe.

You can unplug it for easy access. Squeeze from the bottom upward to unlock it.

It is of course fused and most devices that use way less wattage should have a much lower wattage fuse inline.

I understand your hesitation. But this is pretty darn clean. You'll be hard pressed for a dealer to know you did it and with the 3M taps you (or they) can just unplug it if they baulk during service.

I think Service departments would be just as concerned (if not more) seeing wires going into the FRONT of the fuse box. I've gone into fuse boxes plenty of times. But this was cleaner in this case. Even if fusebox was in the cabin. This is cleaner and less chance of raising a red flag to service.

You can always come around the front and use a straight 12V cigarette lighter adapter. Some have built in fuses. But I consider that more of a hack.

This is also very reversible. Just remove the tap and put a piece of tape.

The Cigarette Lighter circuit is perfect and is for "Accessories".

Oh one other place you can tap is through the OBD port. They might make something generic. But that can raise red flags too, to service.

You can also tap the mirror. I've done that on the GC WK2 and it is NOT fun and varies a lot by year, options and what exact mirror you have. Very thin wires and lots of sh$t in the mirror on my 2017 summit and I was not gonna go in there. I did on my 2014 Limited and posted pics on it a few years back.

This spot I posted is a pretty safe bet, lots of owners have tapped in here. Way better than going through firewall to the fuse box.

There may be some other clean places to tap. Like maybe the Brake Controller Connector.

I actually agree with you 100% - going thru the firewall is completely bogus.

Any insight on how to get to the nearest switched power also?

edit: fusebox ill have to undo anyways when i get car serviced, i think i'll go your route - is there a switched power near it also?

The one I posted pics on is switched. Another reason it works out good for most accessories. The one in the center console glove box is unswitched. It shouldn't be too hard to reach, I never tried. It might be right their behind the same panel on the drivers side. Everything just pops a apart.

One of them, I forget which one, can be changed from switched to un-switched or the unswitched to switched, by moving a fuse or jumper in the fuse box. This is officially supported and might be in the user manual. I think it's the one by the rear lift gate though that can change.

Re: How to get switched 12V 20A switched power for Accessories

You may have missed it, but I added one other option to investigate and that is the Brake Controller Connector. Probably has switched 12V. No Taping wires needed. And they even supply the pig tail for it

My guess is it will only be switched. But you never know until you look.

Do you have a link to those taps? I want to be sure I'm getting the same thing in the right gauge.

They are color coded by gauge. So you want the blue ones.

I've had many radar detector kits by multiple brands and they always include the blue one.

https://www.amazon.com/Install-Bay-3...words=3m+t+tap

There are also these

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A7YO5AK...ing=UTF8&psc=1

The first adds a spade socket to your so you have to have the other half too on your accessory These are nice because you can unplug them.

The second one contains two types. The spade socket and one that just splices in a bare wire. But it's not made for you to unplug it. But you don't need the matching spade on the end if you accessory
