Re: How to: OEM hitch Install

I had a similar problem but it was the tails that didn't work and turn signals did. Dealer found it was a fuse.. So if you say all fuses check out it could be a wiring defect, again something you'd probably want the dealer to try to sort out unfortunately.

Re: How to: OEM hitch Install

I'm about to install the tow package on mine and to my surprise found my GC already prewired. What's the cost for just the 7/4 pin part? I know the harness as a whole is just under 70 bucks so I would imagine just the connector is much less. When I order the hitch will it come with all the hardware and the trim piece?

Re: How to: OEM hitch Install

I priced out the 7/4 as I thought mine was defective, if I remember its about 45 msrp and 25 cost you can find them about 31 ish online.

Thanks

Did you have it programmed by the dealer? Or was it something easy that could be done yourself? I too have the exact same issue and really don't want to pay a dealer to activate something.
Thanks,

Re: How to: OEM hitch Install

The dealer had to activate t with their scan tool. You cannot do it yourself (that I know of).

Re: How to: OEM hitch Install

Fantastic write-up! Thank you for doing this!

How much was the hitch kit from the dealer and what does it come with?

First, check under your rear bumper to see if you are prewired for the hitch. If you are there will be a set of wires that are tie wrapped and capped. Prewired is what the write up is for.

The hitch is part number 82212180AB MSRP of $233
The full wiring harness/adapter is 82212196AB MSRP of $67

I don't have the part number for just the adapter because I purchased the above kit. Check the prices on justforjeeps and your dealer may price match. You will have to get the dealer to flash for stop/turn signal functionality. The price for the flash totally depends on the dealer. My dealer only charged $30.

Re: How to: OEM hitch Install

I'm digging up this old thread hoping someone can help. I posted this:

http://jeepgarage.org/showthread.php?t=37572

About a problem I am having with my dealer/factory installed tow hitch. Sounds like some of the other problems mentioned on this thread and I was wondering how they were resolved. The dealer has had the Jeep now for two days and can find no faults.

Re: How to: OEM hitch Install

I have a 2011 GC Limited that I want to add a trailer hitch. Been researching both OEM and aftermarket units. Prefer the look and interface for the OEM. One harness instruction sheet I found online said that "VIN must be updated with the sales code of the added accessory in order to enable system functionality." Just wondering if this is true. Have not checked yet if I have any of the factory harness installed already.

Re: How to: OEM hitch Install

Great write-up. The pictures and basic instructions were spot on. I purchased a 2012 GC Overland and it didnít come with the trailer package. I asked the dealer to though in the hitch (82212180AB) and I would install it. To my surprise, he did.

When we picked up the CG at the dealer, the hitch was in a big box in the back. Had the hitch, mounting hardware and the new face plate. When we got home I looked under the back of the CG and dang, it was prewired! All I needed was the 7/4 pin connector (56055632AC) and I purchased it at a dealer near where I work for $49.

I finally had a free weekend roll around and decided to tackle the job. Following your instructions made me a lot more comfortable with the procedure and I had the back of the GC in pieces in less than 30 minutes without breaking anything. Followed the instructions for removing the existing cross-member and replaced it with the hitch. When it came to cutting on the bumper, I used a Dremel tool with a very fine saw blade and took my time. It worked out great.

It took me another 30 minutes (and a beer) to put it all back together. I just need to trade cars with my wife (the GC is hers) and swing by the dealer and have then to the update/flash with the scan tool.
