The whole point is I shouldn't have to "get" anything to tie a christmas tree on top of an SUV. I shouldn't have to buy $300 worth of roof rack crossbars or a hitch carrier.

Re: How to tie down a Christmas tree?

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic sheet
  • Large blanket or tarp
  • Gloves
  • Rope or bungee cords
  • Red flag

    • 1 Spread a plastic sheet across the roof of your car upon which the Christmas tree will lie. The plastic sheet will protect the paint of your car from sap and scratches.

    • 2 Stand the tree up and shake it gently. You will want to shake the tree to release any loose needles, insects and insect eggs.

    • 3 Wrap the tree in a large blanket or tarp so that it is completely covered. Wrapping the tree will further protect your car as well as parts of the tree that are vulnerable to wind.

    • 4 Put on a pair of gloves to protect your hands from the tree’s needles. The gloves will assist you in getting a better grasp on the tree when you are lifting it onto the car.

    • 5 Lift the tree with the help of a partner and place it in the center of the roof of your car. Make sure that the stump is toward the front of your car and the top of the tree is at the back. Placing the top of the tree toward the back of the car will protect the top from wind, which could cause it to break.

    • 6 Tie the tree securely to the roof of the car with a rope or several bungee cords. Wrap the rope around the tree, through the car windows and back around the tree so that it is firmly tied to the car. Pull and push the tree to make sure that it does not move and is tied down tightly.

    • 7 Place a red flag or piece of red cloth on the end of the tree if it extends beyond the length of your car. A red flag will signal to other drivers to be cautious of the length of the tree.

  1. Pray!!!

Re: How to tie down a Christmas tree?

Which is how I would strap it to my Lexus. I bought an SUV so it would have a little more utility, and have a roof rack that I could tie a christmas tree down to without having to tie it through the windows...

Re: How to tie down a Christmas tree?

So it went fine with rope criss-crossing the interior. Key is to open the doors and then shut them on the rope rather than go through the windows. I'm still annoyed they don't make adjustable D-rings that slot into the stock rails.

I brought small pieces of microfiber towel to put between the rope and the paint. It's only two months old, so I'm still being paranoid about the paint. Significantly more paranoid than the guy who was strapping a 7-footer to the roof of his $150k S63 AMG without so much as a towel in between. I'd think if you had the coin for that you'd have a couple Rovers or G-classes sitting around that you could drive to the Christmas tree lot.

Re: How to tie down a Christmas tree?

I saw a lady filling a brand new 7 series BMW with bags of mulch at Lowes this summer. She had the trunk filled, backseat, and front passenger seat. No towels or protection!

Must be nice to have so much money a $100,000 car is "just a car" huh?

Glad it went well. We're off to get our tree tomorrow.

Re: How to tie down a Christmas tree?

I used another vehicle to carry the tree...don't want the sap on my JGC anyway.

Re: How to tie down a Christmas tree?

If you have the Pano roof.....I do not think there is any weight rating on the glass, so I would be careful with laying anything down directly on the roof.

Re: How to tie down a Christmas tree?

Well we too made it home. Tied the tree to the door anchors and then shut the rope into the doors.

Still...literally every other SUV had rails with a little space between the rail and the roof they could tie the tree down to.
