Installing parksense do it myself or dealer?

I just purchased the mopar parksense for my WK2 and i was wondering if this is a project i can do myself or should i take it to the dealer? my friend owns a bodyshop and he said he can remove the bumper and install the sensors, but then if i finished hooking it up myself would i still need to take it to the dealer to activate? Thanks .

I can offer some assumptions and comments, I recently paid my dealer to install the park sense kit. They charged $165 for the labor, however they were also installing the factory tow hitch, so there is some overlapping labor there. In fact I was surprised it cost as much as it did but I looked at it as being cheaper then a backup camera.

After seeing the system in action, it probably was not worth paying them for labor. The control pod mounts on the rear passenger side A pillar and all connections are within the pillar, bumper and tailgate areas of the vehicle (to my knowledge). The system is activated when you go into reverse, but it does not use the EVIC or any other car systems like the factory system does. I don't see why this would need to be coded, they could get reverse activation elsewhere in the rear.

I think the most difficult part is cutting the bumper and installing the sensors. The dealer has a well regarded body ship, and although they look OK, they are not perfect, flush and level to the bumper. They didn't damage any paint with the sensor installation, but either removal of the tail light(s) was necessary or the bumper rubbed against the taillight and this did damage some paint on the seam between parts.

The sensors can only be disabled with a switch on the control pod, which is all the way back in the tailgate, not very convenient to disable from the driver seat. However, that said, the system does work well and I can reliably park within 2 feet of our garage wall and/or other parking obstacles. The system does not differentiate distance any closer then 2 feet.

If I could do it again I would get a 430 RBZ and the backup camera kit, which does require coding, and pay the dealer to install this setup instead. In fact I'm doing that now I guess I will just have both in the end.

I don’t have faith in jeep dealer, they could do a bad job, and you could end up with damages to your interior etc. I would get them installed using a 3rd party company who specialise in park sensors. Watch how they install them, then you know for sure it’s done properly. I find park sensors beep to be very annoying, so I only turn it on when needed.

Zolt I just had the backup camera installed on my Laredo and its the best thing I have done. I'm thinking of having parksense added but I hate the way it looks cosmetically on rear bumper. The camera is a good investment. I had a local Dodge dealership install my backup camera, my local Jeep dealership doesn't have a good rep, well really for anything lol. Also while my Jeep was there I had the chrome step pad surround added and they did a great job. they installed the camera and the chrome piece for 180, they usually charge 248 for the install but since ordered the chrome strip through them they gave me a break on the labor. If anyone with a Laredo who doesn't have the backup cam, I highly recommend it!

To answer you question if you go to Just for jeep you will see the instalation instructions, which don't require dealer activation. It is more of stand alone system that pulls power from the rear chassis harness and activates with what the reverse light signal.


I think the back up camera is a better buy than the parksense kit.

The parksense kit is not intergrated in the EVIC like on a Laredo X or higher trim

I is just the audible beeps. and gives not indication of side of the obstruction.

I would spend my money on back up camera and not bother with cutting holes in my bumper and hoping I get it right.

In my car when my back up camera was not working I could look at EVIC and see what side of the car the obstacle was on.

I am considering ordering the front and rear Park Distance Sensor Kit available from https://www.mopar.com.au/Pages/Store/Categories.aspx?p=2&f=14&c=1. From what I understand, the sensors will beep or tone depending on the distance from any objects around the car. However, because there is no display it is impossible to tell which sensor is triggering the sound.

Does anyone know if I can unlock the functionality of the EVIC display to show which sensor is registering a near object?

I know that this is available in the more up-market Cherokees.

There is no connection between the EVIC and the add-on rear-sensors. The add-on system has its own controller in the rear of the vehicle. There is no way to integrate it with the EVIC display.

All of that said, I wonder if someone could salvage the factory rear-warning system from a wrecked Limited/Overland/Summit, then integrate that with the EVIC?
