Re: LED Approach/Entry/Puddle Lighting Mod write-up!!!

I did the led strip lighting on my WK, The strip lighting was from ebay waterproof 15' long cool white lasted all of 6 months !! wasn't waterproof corroded at the internal joints. I have had to remove it all pity because it looked good hidden up behind the mopar ground effects. I had also put a short strip across the front xmember behind the front lip. Pity the ebay ad didn't live up to its claims may possibly fit the led projector puddle lighting next. 1 for each door and possibly ! hiden in the front bumper somewhere to light up the ground in front of the jeep when parked up on cruise nights at mcdonalds or OK diner !!!

Re: LED Approach/Entry/Puddle Lighting Mod write-up!!!

Suzieque, where did you get your lights from? I'm getting ready to get this done and was unable to get the light strips from Vleds and after a search I got a roll of waterproof lights from another vendor. Are the lights just crapping out or are the strips coming loose? Both?

Re: LED Approach/Entry/Puddle Lighting Mod write-up!!!

The led strips I got were advertised as waterproof but they corroded at some of the internal connections. They are short strips soldered together at the manufacturing stage then covered in the plastic. Don't think its just the UK weather getting to Them,Just wrongly advertised or poorly manufactured!! Ebay wins again!!!

I bought a set of LED strip lights from an ebay seller, they lasted a few months, then I bought a set of LED strip lights Walmart, they lasted a few months, but actually looked better quality and were quite bright compared to the ebay seller's. I'm thinking that the led strip lights are supposed to be made to be cut to desired length and I think water makes its way into the lights through the cut and then they fail.

Re: LED Approach/Entry/Puddle Lighting Mod write-up!!!

That actually makes a lot of sense. It's making me think about the roll I ordered and the fact that ill have to cut it. I think what I'll do is cut the length longer than the desired 48" and I can and somehow waterproof the cut end. Maybe using some kind of super glue or plastidip or both.

get some marine grade epoxy mixed up and cover the end in that... I use the marine grade epoxy on my jetski, so i know it is water proof AND durable.

Re: LED Approach/Entry/Puddle Lighting Mod write-up!!!

The strips I got off ebay have a soldered internal connection every 19" and that should be sealed and that is where the problem lies. The corrosion starts at these points!!!

Re: LED Approach/Entry/Puddle Lighting Mod write-up!!!

I cut the length a little longer than needed and plastidipped the cut ends with a few coats. I also made sure the wired ends were also protected with plastidip. I'll be getting it installed this upcoming Tuesday and time will tell.

Re: LED Approach/Entry/Puddle Lighting Mod write-up!!!

I did this mod too... found cheap waterproof exterior LED strips off ebay. Did all my wiring and tapped into the footwell lighting for the fade out effect and unlock entry lighting.

Here's a pic when I unlock the doors and a video of them in action.
