Re: LED License Plate Lights Install w/pics

Thanks whatevrworks for this post! I have been big fan of this forum since I have had my Jeep and while haven't posted much I appreciate everyone's contributions.

Why I decided to do this mod when it is currently 10* here in Michigan I do not know. However, my Putco 'stick-type' LEDs came in the mail today so why not.

Opened the clear cover on the right side and pulled the OEM bulb out and put in the Putco, no problem.

Tried the left side, OEM bulb out no problem. I put in the Putco bulb and it seemed to not want to go in as smoothly as the right side did. I made sure it was in as far as it could and started up the car. Right side lit up nice and bright, left side nothing.

Fiddled with left side more and started car few more times, still no illumination from the left. Took right side LED out and swapped and confirmed both are working LEDs.

To the best of my knowledge the sockets were functioning fine on both sides - however when I put OEM bulbs back in now on left side, nothing. I did use bare fingers to put them back in so who knows, I may have damaged the filaments.

Anyone have and tips or ideas? I really would hate to start with a $20 easy mod and have to end up dropping this thing at a dealer for a new socket.

Re: LED License Plate Lights Install w/pics

I'll add my $0.02 since I just replaced some bulbs with LEDs.

I bought mine from Autolumination:
194 Bulbs 168 W5W 2825 Map Led Parking Signal Side Marker

I used the "194 Goldstar Bulbs With Metal Heat Sink" in "Super White" for the license plate.

I used the "7 Watt Osram Canbus" in "Super White" for the interior lights on the tail gate. (The engineer that designed those light housings needs to be whipped!)

It's only been a couple weeks, but no burn-outs so far. I've used V-LEDs in the past with good results, but Autolumination was a little cheaper.

That's all I have planned so far...
Maybe the front side amber markers at some point.

Sure wish someone would make some nice LED tail lights for the WK2...

He's the Vendor from Taillight Solutions, if it's the same Ken.

Looks good. Putco's 194 LED bulbs do a nice job as license plate bulbs on this vehicle - nice light spread.

Re: LED License Plate Lights Install w/pics

Question for you guys doing this:

The original link in the thread doesn't work, so I'm thinking from the photos, these are the LEDs that OP was talking about:
194 LED Replacement Bulb - Replaces part numbers 168 194 2825

If so, did you go with white or blue?

It seems that these would also fit, which are much, much cheaper:
http://www.amazon.com/194-Wedege-SMD...dp/B002JSFH3G/

Any drawback to using those? For the cheaper ones, my thought is, if they don't fit, I can always put them up in my dome lights instead, which would still be a bonus.

Finally, and importantly, my current lights are burned out. They were burned out when I bought the car, dealer replaced, and now just a week later burned out again. I'm thinking of replacing with LEDs, but I don't know that I want to spend $36 on a pair of LEDs that will also burn out in a week. Is this happening to anyone else, and if so have you found a reason for it?

EDIT:
These also look really good: http://www.kbcarstuff.com/Philips-Bl...9666000kx2.htm

Issue still stands re. my question about the burnout.

Re: LED License Plate Lights Install w/pics

Hi,

I'm personally a fan of the Philips T10 194 LED bulbs. They offer a nice pure white output, and offer very good light spread.

Thanks Steve, I went ahead and ordered those Philips. Now the question will be whether they too will burn out...

I haven't come across that yet -- and we've sold a ton of them.

Re: LED License Plate Lights Install w/pics

I have had the Philips in for a while now and they have not burnt out yet. Love the way they look and put out some good light too. Helps brighten things up a little when using the back up camera
