New Way into Engine Bay Without Going Through the Firewall

Just fitted the UHF radio .... located under driver seat with head unit in the centre bin.

Finding a route from the cabin to the engine bay for the coax antenna cable was researched on a number of forums ... but it seems that there is a not many free passages through the firewall in the Overland.

BUT I found a way and I will post pictues when I have the opportunity .... here is what I did.

Open the door and look the large cable loom that passes from the car to the door .... it's big and black ... you cant miss it ..... BUT that is not we are going to use ..... now cast your eyes down.

On the same panel that the loom emerges there is a black grommet at around floor level. That's the one to use

Here are the steps I did ..

1) Remove the Jeep name plate on the driver side footstep (keeps the carpet in place)
2) Remove the plastic kick panel besides the driver's foot
3) Pull back the floor carpet that tucks under the side kick plate ... only need to uncover about 70mm's ... and look for a styrene filled hole at floor level
4) While on your knees look for the small rubber grommet ( about 20mm in diameter) on the outside of the lower A pillar (see where the big loom goes from the pillar to the door ... well it is down below that on the side of the rocker rail)
5) Remove the small grommet and you will see that there is a styrene filling behind it.
6) Take a coat hanger wire and push it through the styrene and it will emerge inside the cabin. (the hole mentioned in 3 above)
7) The coax can then be threaded through the hole and up behind the hinges to enter the gap at the top of the mud gaurd. Just use your wire to find the passage through to the top of the engine bay
8) You should punch a hole in the small rubber grommet for the coax and use silicon to seal the area
9) Use cable clips to hold the cable and secure it away from harm.

The benefit of this approach is that the cable enters the cabil at floor level and can be routed under the mats without pulling the dasj apart.

Regards

Rob

I hate the look of aerials on the side of the bonnet hence the reason I mounted mine on the rear where I cant see it also done the same with the head unit out of site in the console.

I found another way through right above where the steering colum goes through the firewall theres a nice sized rubber grommet there. Comes out just below the windscreen wiper motor

New Way into Engine Bay Without Going Through the Firewall

There is also another way in on the passenger side.

If you can find the OEM reverse camera install instructions (YouTube has a video) there is a grommet just above the main wire harness connections up behind the passenger side kick panel. Whatever wire you run through this grommet will come out right below the positive jumper cable post under the hood.

Re: New Way into Engine Bay Without Going Through the Firewall

I ended up going through the driver side, right above the pedals.

Took a hanger and pushed the wires through... took ~5mins.
