Pay to flash for tow PKG or just wire it direct?

Howdy all,

Has anyone installed the towing wiring package then successfully
direct wired it and saved the excessive cost for the flash from the dealer?

I saw the other posts that thought it was not doable and plug and playing it seems convenient but you are paying up to $100.00 for flashing it. What does the flash get you that directly wiring does not? Thanks for any info on it! AA

All the flash does is activate power to the factory harness (if you have it installed already from the factory). Look under your rear bumper for a harness with a large round plug at the end.

Otherwise you would have to either buy and install the mopar kit and have that activated by the dealer OR buy an aftermarket harness that would tap off the tail light harness.

Was thinking of doing the same thing? did you end up wiring it directly? i picked up a Reese wiring adapter t connection for 15 bucks and was hoping i wouldn't still need the dealer flash if i used that? How did you make out?

Interesting.

I'm assuming if it is $100 it may just be the time your saving in having it direct wired yourself. Doubt an average joe would take up on the job.

A pre wired fused dedicated circuit in a common location, purpose built for the load, including trailer brake integration(?) and a multi plug receptacle that fits in a uber clean way...and already terminated and waterproof...

Vs. hoping the installer understands canbus can be different just in case, weird crap happens with jeeps, using the correct parts is easy as there's a kit for everything, if there's no plugnplay though, you'll be using the special fancy blue wire taps, the good electrical tape, pick the right wire to tap, somehow the plug gets mounted but if your using the OE hitch it might not look OE. It'll still work absolutely perfect.

I like the OE thing for good reason I hated paying for it but I love the finished product. My dealer and to find a new install code but where very nice about everything. Of course jeep wired it and it's in the TIPM so you might be better off having the neighbors kid rig something up with a hanger and some foil.

Re: Pay to flash for tow PKG or just wire it direct?

I guess I got lucky, my dealer flashed for me for free when I had the Jeep in for warranty work. I was fully prepared to pay for it though. I really did not want to tap into the harnesses when one was already in place. Plus weird things may happen with the extra load from trailer lights on the circuit and the canbus.

Just pay for it but talk to the dealer when you get there. They did it in under 5 minutes. It almost seemed like they just drove it around the building. So 100 is way too high for basically no work on their part.

I agree the OE looks nice but the thing is already had and aftermarket Hitch that only shows up underneath the rear bumper not as part out of a cut out.. and with no place to mount the factory adapter for the 4 way I went this route.

no tapping in wires. its plug and play right into each tail light worked without dealer flash. and for 145 bucks total for hitch and harness. i did it on a 2014 took about 30 mins and for my purposes i saved a couple bucks so i cant complain. just another option if you don't mind going aftermarket

There's no doubt they'll work perfectly.
For me it's the dedicated and load appropriate circuit, a little more capability with larger towables. But they really do the same thing.
It'll work 99% the same and as well as the oe for 1/3 the cost that alone makes it a great option. Now please post up some of the toys that hitch totes around!

Re: Pay to flash for tow PKG or just wire it direct?

Hi guys, I got busy, was not on here for awhile & have not done it yet ;| Thanks for the replies! I have all the OEM stuff already (Harness and Hitch on the car. I am going to look at how it all ties in. As someone said "the flash just powers up the harness". Wouldn't that just be doable powering it up where the harness ties in... in like fashion?

Thank You,

AA
