anyone have experience with plastidip? I want to paint some of the chrome accents on my jeep black but I am worried that using a product like plastidip will eventually chip off.

solution = multiple coats

I plasti-dipped the wheels on my Subaru and the chrome trim on the Jeep. it lasted over a year now and it is still in such good shape that I will be plastic-dipping the wheels on the Jeep as well. And people are correct - at least 1-2 more coats after the surface turned black (4-5 coats in total) and lots of sunshine for a few days.

Thanks guys I am getting some black and also the gloss finish to put on after the black coat. Have you guys used the gloss finish that you put on after your base color?

Use glossifier only if u need a glosy finish.... some people prefer just matt finish, in that case u need only the black plastidip....

When you use plasti dip put a light coat to cove around 50% -60 % at first. Then apply 3-4 nice and even coat, wait 10-15mnts in between the coats... once the black is done wait for 30 mnts and apply glossifier, 2 coats will be enough.....

would love to see some pic once u r done....

I've had plastidip on my emblems for 5 years and it looks as good as it did the first day i did it. ON my old rims, i used plastidip and it lasted for 2 years through all types of weather. I highly recommend it and it doesn't have to be matte in color. You can get the glossifier to spray on afterwards to give it a shine so it doesnt look matte. I've used it and it looks great. www.Dipyourcar.com was where i found a bunch of good info on the product. I love it!

Just used plastidip for the first time today. I wanted to start with something small so I did my jeep emblem on the hood. Used 4 coats of black and 2 coats of gloss. It was so hot here in phoenix that they dried in less than 10 mins but overall I like how it looks and is my first step to changing over all the chrome. Just tape off a square around it and spray about 3-4 coats. Once it dries take your tape off, then peel one of the corners of the square and it will just peel around the edge of the letters, then use a tooth pick for the inside of the letters. Check out YouTube for a visual.. It's easy breezy

Here's a a before and after video of me Plasti Dipping all of the chrome on my 2014 WK2.

You don't have to go to all the trouble I did to cover up your Jeep, but since I was spraying so much I figured I'd just cover the whole thing and then not have to deal with cleaning any over-spray off.

Nobody mentions the over-spray (it almost looks like soot and comes off just by wiping with your hand or a cloth), but on my white Jeep it was pretty noticeable when I first attempted Plasti Dip on the front Jeep emblem.

Some tips after doing it once:

Do multiple (5-6) light coats with the first coat only half way covering up the chrome and the second one finally covering it to where you might only see it in a few places. I think this would've helped it to adhere to the surface more than sticking to itself when it came time to peel the excess off (If the edge you're pulling up isn't well defined or there isn't a big gap between the surfaces this will make a big difference...pretty much all of the window trim and a few places on the mirrors).

Don't spray too close (it'll bubble) and don't spray too far away or it'll get a weird rough appearance like dirt got stuck to it while it was wet. I did my grill three times learning this the hard way.

If you want a good confidence builder start with the front Jeep emblem and then move onto the other emblems on the side/back. That way if you spray to thick or thin you only waste 1/3 of a can and can quickly learn the right way to spray. Also, they're extremely easy to do compared to the handles, mirrors, and window trim.

Make sure you spray the back side of the door handles. This can be really hard to do without getting it too thick on the topside of the handle (if you get it too thick it'll bubble and once it's there you can't cover it up). If I redo it I might try to spray from the inside of the Jeep out through the window to get a good angle. On the front it won't matter since you'll peel off the backside where the sensor is (it's black anyways).

And...since I'm already rambling, don't tape to close to whatever you're spraying. I taped too close to my window trim and when it came time to peel off the excess I was peeling a tiny 1/8" strip with tweezers that kept ripping apart every inch or so. I would've been much better off trying to peel a 1" strip that I could pull down and away from the trim which would've helped it "break apart" from the trim I wanted it to stay on.

Sorry, you got my two glasses of whisky/late night answer on this one, but hopefully it helps.:sleepy:

Yes, but make sure you have a few good coats on each wheel. The biggest problem is dealing with the accumulation of brake dust. If you really like/want black wheels then I highly recommend getting them powder coated.

Think of how much time you spend cleaning, preparing, etc to dip the wheels. In the end, they will never look at good as OEM or powder coated wheels. In time, the dip also peels off around the tire.
