Question for Hemi guys regarding oil change.

I did the first oil change two weeks ago on my GC. Getting the old filter off was a pain in the ass with that metal piece that sort of guards the filter, and the tiny hole they give you in the splash cover to access the filter and oil pan. I had to use an adjustable oil wrench pliers like these to get the old filter off.


Of course I ened up denting the old filter up pretty good, but got it loose enough to get it the rest of the way off by hand. I didn't want to use the same pliers to tighten the new filter because it would most likely dent again. What are you guys using on your GC to loosen/tighten the filter? I've never had such restricted access to an oil filter in any car I've owned so far. The clearance between the radiator/hoses and the dumb splash cover really hinder any tools in there.

Just looking for input on what you guys use.

Yea the same gorilla who threw your filter on must have been working when my Overland was built. I used a rubber strap wrench to get mine off. It was tough because the oil drain shield was in the way, but I got it off without damaging the filter. As far as putting the new filter on, just remember to put a light coat of oil on the gasket of the new filter and hand tighten. The filter shouldn't need more torque than you can provide with your hand ... Unless your the Chrysler gorilla.

I don't have a hemi but with my '08 4.7 & '04 Subie I just spin them on by hand after pre-oiling the gasket and filter, then once the gasket mates against the engine I give it a 1/4-1/2 final turn till very snug. Always comes off by hand next time without any grief.

The filter is machine tighted at the factory--that's why its a pita to remove.

And, access to the filter is a known "engineering" headache.

When I swapped out my oil/filter at 1500miles, the oil-tech at the dealer explained the factory tightening and showed me how tough it was to get at the filter.

I did hand tighten the new one as hard as I could by hand. I rechecked it a few days later and noticed a bit of oil down the side of the filter. Oil level on the stick didn't move. I did put fresh oil on the new filter gasket and cleaned the area where the filter meets the motor. Maybe I didn't tighten it enough. I'm going to recheck it tonight. Also, is 20 ft/lbs the correct torque spec for the drain bolt?

I installed the oil filter on my V8 one turn as the instructions that came with the mopar oil filter stated after the filter gasket made contact with the oil filter boss. After a few days, it left a trickle down the side of filter, so I tightened it some more. It still likes to leave a drop at the end of the filter every couple of weeks. Next oil change I will use a Purolator Pure One oil filter. I doubt it, but maybe the Purolator will seal better. Although I believe the Mopar oil filter is made by Purolator.

I also had a similar sealing problem with my old 2000 WJ Limited that had the 4.7L V8. Maybe the Mopar engines have a porous oil filter mounting surface which makes it tough to get a proper seal?

I've never had this problem with any other make of vehicle or motorcycle.

My exact experience. I've never had an issue on any other vehicles. I always torqued the filter down by hand, but my other cars had better access to grip the filter. Hopefully things change after my next oil change.

I had to use the end cap wrench as above on my first oil change thanks to the gorilla. Since then I just hand tighten no more than 1/2 turn after oiled gasket contact. I always wipe the gasket surface clean when the old filter comes off. Never had a problem with drips or hand removing the next time on the hemi or any other engine I've owned.

I saw this picture in a previous message thread and puchased one. I also have a filter wrench that I used in conjunction with that end cap wrench. I was a total controtionist when it came to getting the filter off while working through that tiny hole that was provided. That metal "guard" (as someone put it) was definitely a pain, but it sure came in handy because it's a funnel for the oil that drips out of the oil filter.

I tightened the heck out of the oil filter once I got it back on. Next time, and this is for all those that are going to change the oil and filter, take the plastic panel off first (if it comes off. I haven't tried yet). Your life will be so much easier.

I used an end cap wrench to remove the stock filter and I use K&N filters. They have a "nut" formed on the bottom and requires a 1" socket to get off. Easy on easy off. 1/4 turn after hand tight is good enough.
