Repco - be warned!

I've had a rotten experience with Repco parts stores (In Aus).

I bought 4 vehicle positioning jacks 2 years ago and the plastic rollers have all split and are broken. While the warranty is 12 months, I have hardly used them - maybe a dozen times at most.

Repco has declined to replace or refund, even though they are obviously of unsatisfactory quality.

Another ex-Aussie company that is no longer reputable and does not stand by its products.

Be warned.

Sir Jack would be rolling in his grave.

If they are a year older than the warranty coverage then I would expect them to decline a replace or refund.

Yep, decline is the easy answer and expected. But usage must have a bearing on fit for purpose irrespective of an arbitrary time frame. Repco is owned by a big conglomerate now and I have made a claim with "head office". We shall see....

Australian law specifically protects you for a period of time considered reasonable for the said item, and retailers can (and are being) fined for even just "saying" otherwise.

I had a kettle that died a few months ago. Took it back to the store. They obviously gave me the standard apology that the item is three years old and the warranty is only for 12 months. I disagreed, another employee then likewise agreed it should not be covered. I then explained that I do not find it reasonable that a kettle costing a whopping $150 should only last three years and that my consumer rights in this regard are not overridden by their 12 month warranty.

There was no debate. There was no delay. I was immediately given a replacement kettle. And that's of no surprise what-so-ever, since it is an offence to even "say" otherwise and the ACCC have been aggressively pursuing and fining all reports of this occurring in the past 24 months.

If your jacks were 4 or 5 years old I would accept that under the conditions of a hot garage they could being exhibiting the signs you mention - disappointing but we do live in a throwaway society. But two years and in condition that would show very little use is totally unacceptable.

Lets please not go down this ACCC rabbit hole. You are correct with regards to Australian Consumer law, however, that section about reasonable time is quite vague. It then comes down to whether or not your time is worth chasing it up if you really feel the need to. In some cases it will be. In others it is just easier to walk away.

As for the usage thing, I completely understand that, but please understand that they get dickheads contacting them non stop with BS sob stories about hardly used, was only doing such and such etc... and mot of the time in my experience of people trying to pull one over on me is that they are full of it. That then screws those that are genuine when saying it was only rarely used, because they are a tiny percentage of claims.

ACCC rabbit hole? The "reasonable time" is not vague, it is broad. This allows coverage for all manner of consumer items.

Personally, I find the information in this thread to be relevant and pertinent. Many consumers would falsely believe that their rights end with a warranty period. So yes please let us continue down this rabbit hole.

You need to pick your fights or you'll go mad. But sometimes it is worth going down the rabbit hole.

Repco have agreed to refund my money .
