Secondary Battery

I've searched the forums and haven't been able to find has anything about a secondary battery.

I am interested in this as a possibility for powering equipment/electronics while camping.

I have the V-6 and there is a lot of extra room under the hood. What would be needed? Could this 2nd battery be recharged while driving with the existing alternator?

Any better alternatives for power?

Thanks in advance…

Re: Secondary Battery

Normally it should be possible. My work trucks have a second battery in them to power radios, extra lights, etc. and they are wired up to charge with the vehicle running but are somehow seperate from the main battery to keep from draining it down if a radio (CB) is left on accidently at night. I don't know how this would work with the new battery type and its location under the seat but I am sure there is a way to wire it up. A good radio/stero shop should know how to do it or even the dealership.

West Marine (boats) also has a lot of products that could be used as well as a good amount of information. Nothing that would be designed for the GC, but could be modified to work.

Re: Secondary Battery

+1 to potentially folloeing the battery bank setups used in marine appkications for the same reasons. They typically are gated with a switch that can run on either battery solo so you always have the starter backup. Both are charged via the alternator. Agreed on enough space underhood for the second cell, plus you may get a wiring assist from the remote posts already wired underhood, or just direct wire thru the firewall to your main battery.

I would also recommend talking to your friendly Jeep service department to make sure you do not fry your PCM or muck up the CANBUS.

Re: Secondary Battery

Thanks for the replies. I was hoping someone had it figured out here in the US since the vehicle is into i's second year. The Aussies talk about it on jeepforum.com, but their wk2 are designed with the steering wheel on the other side and they're all trying to figure out where to put it. One guy seemed to figure it out by putting his next to the primary under the passenger seat, but with the caveat "not if you have air suspension" which I have.

Re: Secondary Battery

Put the 2nd battery in the empty battery box under the driver's seat.

Re: Secondary Battery

In Australia lots of 4wd's are fitted with aux batteries for all sorts of duties like running an extra fridge for the cold ones.....
Here we have the battery under the drivers seat, without QL there is space under the passenger seat for another battery (after taking out the plastic bits - if you search Jeep forums over here there are threads with pics).
My WK2 will have an additional AGM battery mounted on a slide in module in the back which will also take my fridge and other camping stuff.
This extra battery will be charged via a 30 amp DC to DC smart charger - that gets its power from a battery isolator between it and the main battery. This is to ensure there is no conflict with the existing charging system or battery, when the motor is switched off the feed to the DC to DC charger is off.
The system will simply see the charger as an additional load whenever it is on and compensate accordingly.
You can simply charge through the battery isolator but after a fair bit of research I am convinced the addition of the DC to DC charger is the best way to avoid issues with the WK2 existing system and get a fully charged aux battery in the shortest possible time.

The electronic battery isolator here was AUD$129 and the smart charger was AUD$250.
Definitely you will have similar chargers and isolators available over there.

Re: Secondary Battery

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies.

As I mentioned in my post, my Overland does have QL, so I am still hoping to hear of the best solution.

Slide module? Not sure I want a battery taking up extra space in the back. The V6 seems to have room under the hood.

Thanks again

Unfortunately those of us with the CRD and QL don't have any available space to add a second battery. Under the bonnet (hood) and under the seat - no room.
The module is made so it will just slide in the back, bolt down and connect up when we are going away. It carries the 12v fridge, storage drawers, table and chairs all securely fastened for off road work.
Under the bonnet will work fine if you can get a spot to put a suitable bracket that can get good support - just don't put the battery where it will be exposed to extreme heat.

Thanks for the info. I appreciate your reply. Do you have any pics of your set up?

Re: Secondary Battery

I only have pics from just before I pulled it out of our Nissan Patrol 4wd to modify for the Jeep and haven't fitted it back up yet....
It had to be shortened 2" and narrowed by 2" to suit.
The 12v fridge goes on the RH side, it is fitted to a sliding base so it can be moved forward to access it. It is only a bit over 2' long so there is room just behind the fridge to fit an AGM battery inside a plastic battery box - completely protected and away from conflict with camping gear.
Our chairs and small table go vertically on top with a ratchet strap over, against the bracket. The drawers store parts, food and beverages.
I first made this from 5/8" square tube with marine ply cover over 20 years ago and it has moved on through a number of vehicles in various reincarnations since. Many many many trips under the belt.
Next weekend I will fit the latest version into the WK2 and I will take more pics then if anyone is interested.
