Re: Sharkfin Antenna Install with Pics

I have one of these for my G8 and love it. Such a visual improvement.

Worth noting, the stock antenna has a 4 inch antenna that screws in that was removed for the photo.

I used to have one on my Mazda Protege5. I love that shark fin look.

Re: Sharkfin Antenna Install with Pics

I don't understand why these are standard equipment in the first place. Especially when you consider that many owners will have issues with clearance of their garage doors or issues loading cargo on the roof.

Is it a cost-related issue? Or are the shark fin antennas not really as good as the mast antennas?

Re: Sharkfin Antenna Install with Pics

My Suburban has AM/FM in the side rear window glass. And Corvettes have XM antennas mounted in the side mirrors. Would it have really been that hard to do on the GC?

probably a cost issue. Definitely not quality. Seems to me the local talk radio AM station comes in better. No change in satellite or FM. At least as good as factory. It must be cost, stock wire antenna probably cost them a couple bucks compared to the fin and the interior circuit. These go for about $80 with shipping.

My 4Runner has a diversity antenna system built into the glass on both side rear windows. Each wire grid is a different design and the headunit picks up whichever signal is stronger at any given time. It's a really excellent antenna that does a great job of picking up even relatively weak signals.

Diversity antennas reduce fading and dropouts, but cost more than a simple rubber duck or equivalent.

Well, we're not talking about a low-cost economy car here....with the prices they're asking for a new Grand Cherokee, I don't see why it wouldn't already have a built-in diversity antenna system. Then there would be no need for a mast antenna or a shark fin antenna, etc....

True, but . .. .there would be more added expense than just putting the antennas in the glass. There would also have to be a second antenna for the satellite radio. That has to be on a horizontal surface (such as the roof or the top of mirrors like on some other cars). They could have put the AM/FM in the glass and done away with the "whip" style antenna, all that would have been need would be a small sirius antenna.

But as I mentioned *COST* is the issue. Its kind of obvious they had to pick and choose what to re-engineer into quality materials and what to leave alone. . for now.

Re: Sharkfin Antenna Install with Pics

Lots of small items, like the wooden shift knob, were decontented from preproduction units. Who knows that there might be even more decontenting ahead, but bottom line is that the GC is succeeding in part because it is priced under the competition.

Lower price, less stuff.
