Know it well -- wife is from Mitchell County and she and her siblings are all K-Staters.

Lots of great history in your outfit!

Re: 2012 North American Diesel?

I just saw one off of Olympic in West LA.....manufacturer plates. They are testing it and can't wait to buy one.

I hope that's a sign they will be available sooner rather than later.

well those that are interested in it, please do stock up on Optilube, Stynadyne, etc. you'll need the lubricity...our diesel is horrible.

There are many diesel cars and SUVs here in Canada and I've never heard a complaint like that. I'm sure we have the same low sulfur diesel you have in the US.

Re: 2012 North American Diesel?

^^^ +1

The diesel we have today has no issues with modern automotive diesels being built today. Unless you've heard otherwise I am sure the throngs of VW, Mercedes and now BMW diesel owners would be lined up at the dealer getting serviced if there was an issue.

The fuel is not 30% more expensive, its 10-15% more expensive and nets you 30% better mileage, thats still a net increase of 15-20%.

Correction:
Only ULSD has been available for street use since 2007. Dyed diesel will sometimes not be ULSD.

In 2007 the OM642 was only available in the WK with the limited or overland trim. Which put it around a 43 or 44k MSRP vehicle. At the time a ML320 with the OM642 was around 47k MSRP.

In 2008 the Laredo "X" package(higher level trim laredo) was available with the diesel OM642. IIRC that priced out to about 47k, making it a 4K option on top of the normal "X" package. It was also still available in the Limited and Overland.

Of course what seems to have been overlooked was the 05-06 KJ Liberty with the VM428. That was a $2500 option when the KJ CRD's were still new. CRD KJ's also still retain a ~$3K premium over their gasser counterparts.

Stop looking at the WK CRD for a minute and look at the KJ CRD, better mileage, more torque than the 3.7L gasser, not a very expensive engine option, retains the extra purchase value. etc etc. The KJ CRD was a winner that sold many more units than DCX expected, I think they got greedy with that and decided to try the WK CRD, which I think was a flop in comparison, not nearly as many sold as KJ CRDs, I think the price being the primary factor.

Keep in mind that diesel is also harder to find than gasoline in your neighborhood gas stations (around here, maybe one in five carries diesel... if that many).
Ya not as many stations carry diesel, but its not like you can never find it, or that you even have to go out of your way to get it. There are gas stations on every corner in the US, I mean quite literally in same cases, each corner of a 4 way intersection will sometimes have a gas station, so its not like finding a diesel station is hard.

Whats more annoying is when a station has 1 or 2 pumps and the gassers block the pump and then sit there taking their sweet time while you have to wait for the only pump you can use. THATs a bigger issue than how many stations carry diesel. (Inconsiderate Jerks those are).

And yes, 10-15% price increase for diesel is typical.

I corrected this above, but yes it made for an expensive SUV. By contrast the VM powered KJ made for an inexpensive SUV.

Re: 2012 North American Diesel?

Pennsylvania is considering a fuel tax change that would result in another nickel per gallon increase in the cost of diesel over gasoline (18.7 vs. 13.8 cents increase).

Re: 2012 North American Diesel?

I heard a rumor that the CRD will be available in North America (Canada at least) a little later in 2012.
Can anyone confirm that this is true, or is it still scheduled for 2013?

I would guess that the MY2013 will be available a year from now just as the 2012's are here now.
