Re: 2014 Diesel

This may shock some of you but I am a Canadian buying new from the states, therefore I will have NO warranty from the start.

Some of you may say that's dumb and I will prob. agree, however I plan on getting aftermarket warranty anyway for like $3000 for 5 years,

Considering I am saving $15500 on the purchase 3k for warranty is well worth it.

I'm Canadian too but living in the USA. Have you checked how long you need to own the car before importing it. I thought it was 6 months.

Re: 2014 Diesel

Yes I did my research,

There is no given time frame, you just can't be sold a NEW Chrysler product in the states. I called about 7 dealers they all said the same thing, against the law, some bullshit about anti-competive bill or something like that.

Buying used is no problem. So you can buy a dealer demo with like 250 miles on it, then it's legal.

I have a friend in New Jersey so he'll just buy it and then sell it to me.

Screw you Chrysler Canada.

I will win.

What's crazy is how much people were saving, doing the same with Acura MDXs, while the were being built in Canada. Go figure.

Re: 2014 Diesel

To the original poster, Fiat is also the parent company of Ferrari. I think they know a little bit about building engines.

Yes that's true you can buy a used vehicle. Just remember to add the cost of converting your speedometer and putting in daylight running lights (if they don't have it). Had a friend who but my bimmer and imported it to Canada. It ended up costing him a few grand but certainly nothing like what you're saving.

Re: 2014 Diesel

Fiat bought Ferrari years ago.

Tata bought jag and land rover years ago as well

Doesn't mean that all tatas are jags.

Invalid point you have made

Or how about VW buying Bugatti, Bentley, Audi amongst other brands

VW doesn't exactly make the best engines around

I've never seen a Ferrari with a diesel though.

IMO, if you're worried about long term reliability, like 10+ years, get the Hemi. It's the only one of these engines that has been around that long, with models still running great. It's also a much simpler engine, so if something does go wrong, it will be cheaper to fix, and since its more common, it will be easier to find a mechanic or parts for it.

If worried about long term reliability, I'd also avoid the 8 speed transmission. It's too new and unproven.

Re: 2014 Diesel

Again I did my research

Day time runners are standard on 2014 JGC With the led lights

Changing speedo from miles to KM is not a requirement.
Even if it was the 2014 has a screen in the cluster not a conventional needle

Lastly it needs the EIS, which is a immobilizer which the 2014 has.

So I'm good, no extra $$ spent

Converting the speedometer takes two or three taps of a button on the steering wheel. DRLs are standard or available depending on trim level.

OP - Most dealer demos are sold as new because they have never been titled. Having your friend buy it will probably incur a few thousand in NJ sales tax. I'm not sure if their will be more sales tax when he sells it to you.

Will Canada charge you anything to bring it back across the border?

Re: 2014 Diesel

Yes I have to pay full tax on the vehicle.

Which in my province is 13%

But paying 13% here in Canada or the border is the same difference.

Just didnt think of the tax on the jersey side.. Hmm
Normally when buying used in the states a Canadian pays no tax in any state as the vehicle won't be registered in the US.

Maybe I'll hire a car broker instead..

Re: 2014 Diesel

Your friend in NJ is probably going to be stuck with a large sales tax bill. Not sure if he can avoid it by not registering the car. Too bad your friend is not located in Delaware or another sales tax free state. Between the warranty and NJ sales tax, your savings is quickly disappearing.
