Milous posted a PDF that went over this stuff now.

And basically, if you run out of DEF... you are SCREWED. The engine will not start.

From the PDF:
Quote:
There are three warning levels to indicate to the customer when the fluid is low or incorrect. This strategy is consistent with industry protocol:
• The first warning will occur when DEF is sufficient for only 500 miles. The customer will hear a chime and get a cluster display message reading LOW DEF REFILL SOON.

• The second warning level will occur when the tank level is approximately at the 200-mile range. The customer will hear a chime and get a cluster display message reading REFILL DEF ENGINE WILL NOT RESTART IN XXX MILES. If the message is ignored until the tank is empty, the vehicle will not start.

• When the DEF tank has about one mile’s worth of fluid or less in the tank, the customer will hear a chime and get a cluster display message reading REFILL DEF ENGINE WILL NOT START. The vehicle will not start until a minimum of 2.0 gallons of approved diesel exhaust fluid is added to the tank.

I guess if you keep ignoring the message for 500mi you deserve to be stopped, as you are too stupid to drive anyhow.

Re: 2014 Diesel Question

On the DEF: it is $2.80 - $3.00 nationwide; available at many high end truck stops at the pump. Pilot Flying J (The diesel truck nozzle won't fit, but the DEF nozzle will.) Bring some empty gallon containers with you for your back up.
Also, many truck stops don't sell B5 ULSD or less, only B15 ULSD. I can use the B15 in my motorhome but not in the Jeep. So, yes, the least expensive place for DEF may not have any fuel you can use...
How many miles on a tank? How many gallons in a tank? You do the math. (i.e. it is not a big expense.) (I'm too lazy to look up the numbers.)

OK, I looked at some numbers. 8 gallon tank for 10,000 miles = no more than $300 for the first 100,000 miles. I spent more than that in floor mat replacements for my current diesel with 60k on it..

DEF:
Non-toxic and non-polluting
Non-flammable
Stable and colorless
Non-hazardous
Does not require special handling

Re: 2014 Diesel Question

Surely you could jumper the sensor to set going. The question then is, would there be any would be potential damage from not having it, or how long could you go befopre thre was any damage?

Re: 2014 Diesel Question

I would think the pump and injection system would not be designed to run dry. Bypassing it , I would expect would be very difficult. Fortunately we do not have wee injection.

You can't run it empty. The engine won't start.

Re: 2014 Diesel Question

Surely if you were doing a lot of traveling, you would buy a small bottle and throw it in the spare tyre well. It really is a non issue.

Plus I would think 10,000 miles would give you enough time to plan ahead...

Well, you can use B15... just need to alter your oil change schedule by about 2k.

And yeah, DEF is not a major investment at all. And really, the only down side is the cat piss odor it has.

I figure I'll grab a couple Gerry cans and fill em up (keep 10-20 gallons in the garage), as I'm sure the dealer will charge $5 a gallon or something obnoxious.
