My biggest concern about an after market system is the quality of the finished work. Broken panels, melted carpet, stripped screw holes, speakers shaking loose; stuff like that. I have seen all these things happen in after market installations.
OK, here is the Challenge with doing what you are saying with the Overland... There are simply MORE positions of speakers in the Harmon Kardon Version. They actually have more and or larger openings for the Harmon Speaker set which means there is extensive work that needs to be done to get there. Now saying that it is possible.

I have included the "Green Edge" speaker layout for the Summit so that you can get an idea of where the extra placements are. You certainly don't need to add more speakers to all of these areas and it is very likely that you can easily improve on the Sub. Thing with "Green Edge" is that they are about efficiency and sure, you pull them out and they don't look like much but watts per db these little guys are pretty sweet, so I would say if you are looking to replace the Alpine system with something comparable, you look at efficiency.

In the Pro-Audio world I have been doing a lot of work with d&b audiotechnik (not to be confused with db technologies who are not even in the ballpark literally) and my JBL Rep (Harmon Group) would kill me if he heard me compare these but I think Green Edge is a lot like the thinking that goes into d&b Pro stuff (Homepage | d&b audiotechnik). The largest amp d&b uses is 700 Watts a side and they use them to Drive triple (Cardioid) 18" Subs that would knock you over. To give you a comparison we used to use Crest Audio 10001s which were 5000 Watts a Side stable at 1 ohm to drive a similar EV box. The d&b Box does better job at sound quality and you need way LESS of them to get similar results.

So ok we are not pro audio here but you will see what my thinking is. If you look for very efficient speakers to replace the speakers in the Overland you can start by simply swapping out the Front doors and pillars as well as the center speaker. I would of course also replace the Sub in the Alpine system again with a more efficient unit. Many people have had excellent success replacing just the speakers. If you know Alpine, their amps were not always the most efficient BUT they always had good sound. The Alpine stuff was often more money but they had solid electronics. I would try new speakers before replacing the amp because it still has good bones, really just a matter of whether you want more volume/headroom.

As for the rattle factor, I listen to things pretty loud and I have found the entire Jeep Platform (and Durango) simply holds together better than other stuff (CDJ and otherwise). My Yukon was a Rattle Box after 30,000 miles but the Jeeps seem to hold up better. My Personal thought on this is the Mercedes tech that crept in. Mercedes design their stuff to be driven on cobble stone roads in Europe and I find the chassis stiffness to go a long ways in long term solidness. NOW saying that, if you have it apart, add some dynamat or some other extra insulation in the process and make sure that the people taking it apart know you will spend the extra $50-$100 to replace ANY plastic clip that is even marginal.

So the answer is yes, with some research and care I am sure you can exceed the Summit quality of audio. I would give you more audio references but the last sub I installed in a car was a Cerwin Vega AI (Acurate Image) and totally for efficiency and clarity.... I think they were discontinued over 15 years ago!

Re: 2014 JGC Diesel Ordering

Wow, that Harmon Kardon is really pretty awesome.

I'm probably going with a Alpine PDX-V9 AMP. (5-Channel 900 Watt RMS Class "D" Amplifier,100 watts per 4 channels 500 watts for the sub). Replacing the front separates and the rear separates and the sub with upgraded Alpine Speakers, using existing mounting spaces.

Not going to try and compete with the Harman Kardon.

Thanks for the info. I don't think 80% of the people who buy Summits will appreciate the sound system.

You are probably right!

It is not as hard to get there as you think, they are doing more speakers less power. With a little EQ work you can get it to sound close or better!

The Harmon system sounds good BECAUSE it is EQed for the space, and there is a lot to be said about proper balancing. The kick should hit you in the chest, not the bowels

Pretty Hard to beat the Harmon Kardon system and yes I fell in love with the Brown upscale leather in the Summit...

Only problem I have now is my Neighbor just took delivery of the EXACT same Jeep but a Petrol Engine
But when your neighbor looks over and sees the Ecodiesel, he will drool, when you blow him off the line, he will be shocked, and when he hears about your gas milage, he will weep.

Especially down the road if I Bluespark it, might not compete with your burn outs though...

Hey Will, you seem to know a lot about the system. One of the reasons I went with the Summit is for H/K audio. Do you know if the system will play .FLAC files? Almost all of my music is FLAC.

If it doesn't I will be wary wary sad.

I am familiar with the lossless codec but I have not tried to run it in any of the Jeeps as of yet.

I do believe someone had commented that it did not work but that is totally unverified and just going from memory.

Who want's to put a .FLAC file on their USB drive and see if their 2014 8.4 UConnect will play it?

Here is a link to a test file!

That's what I'm hoping for. So, is "drool, shock, and weep" just a meaner (and therefore more satisfying) version of "shock and awe"?

Re: 2014 JGC Diesel Ordering

Question for all the people with GC Diesels already ordered. I'm station in Central California and at least 3 dealers have flat out told me they aren't doing orders at all on the diesel. I've been talking to dealers for 2 weeks now and it seems impossible to give these people my money. Looking for a 4x4 Overland Diesel.
