Exclamation 2014 vm diesel issues

Just wondered if anyone else had issues with their VM 3.0 CRD engine reliability?

My Summits been with Jeep since November last year, 7 weeks now. Developed an engine knock, took it in, originally told was an injector array issue on bank 1 despite it being a lower engine knock!

Case opened, injector banks swapped / replaced, then cylinder heads replaced, replacement engine authorized in the end just before Christmas.

So, new engine needed on a 16 month old Summit (2014) that's only done just over 16k miles!

Anyone else had issues?

Search this forum - there are a plethora of others that have had engine issues. There is a TSB for the heads to be replaced as well.

Apparently the head issues are due to driving it like a grandma (not kidding).

DISCUSSION:

The root cause of the engine shudder has been found to be due to excess carbon build-up
on the exhaust valve stems and will typically happen on vehicles driven mostly in light load
conditions. As a result, new cylinder heads have been released that are equipped with
newly designed valve stem seals. These newly designed seals are designed to help
prevent excessive carbon from building up on the valve stems.

There is some truth to this statement. The VM diesel, much like the Mercedes before, likes to be driven hard.

Issue with mine was bottom end knocking from cam/piston rods - nothing to do with the heads.

Heads / injector rails all had to be replaced as part of the warranty process before FCA would authorize engine replacement.

Already checked the forums and could not find anyone else with same issues.

I don't know why the heads keep getting mentioned as I already said in the original post they were replaced as part of the repair process before a new engine was authorized - fault is lower engine knock nothing to do with either of the heads!

Heads are not the issue on mine, fault is lower engine related which is why a replacement engine has been authorized. and its never been driven like a grandma, quite the opposite in the uk you don't get chance to drive "like a grandma due to our roads, more like "drive it like you stole it".

And had a 2007 WK CRD with Mercedes engine prior which was part exchanged for the WK2 back in 2014 when I bought it new, never had an issue.

No, the VM Motori is quite reliable, as you say the heads issue isn't relevant. There have been a few complaints of rough idling, but that doesn't sound the same as your issue either. But they found replacing the fuel rail solved that problem, for most.

Re: 2014 vm diesel issues

Can you guys please elaborate on what the engines were doing prior to having to rebuild or replace.

I test drove a beautiful 2013 CRD today. My concerns surround the engine, it has 75000 kms at present. There however seemed to be a low rev rattle when the accelerating, gently or otherwise. There is also distinct grey smoke coming out of the engine even at idle. I'm thinking this could be an expensive fix if I went with it.

Thanks

Basically if you check my original post, its a constant knocking always there, increases relative to engine speed and is there all the time regardless of idle or accelerating / rpm. Dealership initally tried to fob me off that it was noisy injectors on bank 1 even though was coming from bottom of engine!

Never any issue with smoke or anything. They ended up replacing engine but I refused it back and ended up with a new 2016 summit in the end - only done just under 6k at moment and had it about 5 months now so too soon to tell but still weary of it happening again....
