Question 230mm ELSD to drive shaft interface play

Hi guys,

Just about 6 month ago, I became a proud (maybe a bit less now) owner of a 2012 3.0L Diesel GC Overland.

Recently I noticed a slight grumble in a right turn and attributed it to a deteriorating front left CV joint. While changing to winter tires, I decided to take a closer look, and indeed there is some rotational play between (plunge joint?) the "cup" of the outer CV joint and the shaft, but not too much.

What worries me though, it the fact that while I was looking at the rear end, I discovered considerable radial play between the outer part of the inner CV joint, the part with the spline on it, and the differential.
Just like this guy here: all credit in this video goes to alexbheinrich. I am just using it here for convenience.

My first thought was, there must be a bearing which is accessible and replaceable after shaft removal, but a call to the local dealer revealed otherwise. No bearing is available for this. Looks like there are no bearings. BTW I am not talking about the carrier bearing.
Checking the rest of the 4 shafts shows the same problem, though it is only very slight on the other 3, for now at least.

Now I am afraid the rear end is shot, as I also have as faint shudder when backing up, which is rhythmic. It almost sounds like one or a couple of teeth on the ring gear are bad and every time this section comes around it makes noise - but only in reverse.

The next disappointment is the fact (or fiction?) that there are no rebuild kits for the 230mm ELSD RII. Can anyone confirm?

Has anyone experience any of the above, and can provide some information? I would hate having to spend 3k+ for a replacement rear end so short after buying the car.

Sorry for the long post.

Cheers,

Yours Truman

Re: 230mm ELSD to drive shaft interface play

Hello again,

It has been a while since I posted my question about the play between the drive shaft and the ELSD. There is quite a lot of "clunk" when switching from reverse to drive, which I guess is the result of the "sloppy" fit. I thought I would share what I have learned since.

Took the car in for a regular service and the passenger vanity mirror light bulletin - btw those are no joke, the dealer showed me a visor assembly they removed that day, the plastic was completely melted.

During a test drive with the mechanic I mentioned the problem with the shaft, but according to the tech, this is completely normal, including the clunk - go figure. I am still not convinced, since the play in the left and the right half-shaft are slightly different. Will have to wait and see how it develops I guess.

Once the pumpkin falls apart, I will let you know

Cheers
