7 Seat Upgrade, has anyone done this?

Hey All,

Been a while since jumping on the forum.

But I thought I'd put this out to the brains trust.
Long story short we needed a 7 seater and basically the thought of trading in my JGC was making me to say the least.

We ended up hiring a Kia carnival for the month that we needed it but that ran into $18oo.

So I got to googling and found this in the interweb.

http://www.techsafeseating.com.au//t...at-upgrade.pdf

Has anyone had this installed, if so thoughts comments would be appreciated?

I called around and the head rest model runs at $2700AUD in cloth trim the basic nil head rest is $2100AUD or so.

Given the outlay on a rental for a month it's not a bad option in my mind, happy to be proven wrong here so let me know.

Seems it may throw up a few issues, like access to the spare wheel and diminished boot/truck space.

Not sure about ease of installation(they do the initial install) and later removal & re-install.

Other than that it's meeting ADR standard according to the literature.

It seems to be a temporary solution though, I say that because it's so small only a very small kid can sit back there. It also doesn't leave room to take anything with the seven of you.

Re: 7 Seat Upgrade, has anyone done this?

I'm curious about the actual seat mounting points since the spare tire compartment cover takes up most of the space under this seat. Obviously it can't bolt to that.

I like how they used an SRT for the Model.

Jeep is apparently bringing out a seven seat version called the Wagoneer a dealership told me so that us people who don't want our GC's turned into a mini bus are not affected.

Re: 7 Seat Upgrade, has anyone done this?

So I found out a bit more about this, and thanks for the questions raised in the replies!

Its not temporary, in fact you have your registration updated to state you can legally carry 7 seats(in NSW at least).

The anchor points are the tie down points which seems like a logical spot.

The seat folds forward when not in use giving you back a bit of cargo volume.

I'm considering getting it, seems like a practical option. BMW gives this as an option on X5, although its a 7k option.

I haven't heard about the Wagoneer coming out in the press, even so I'm doubtful I'd upgrade to that for the few weeks a year i need a mini bus!

Seems that these would be the only mounting points. Then the question becomes, are these cargo tie down points sufficiently strong enough to anchor a seat with passengers?

They must be upgrading something structural, as the tie down points are weak as piss and so is the mechanism they resolve through. The fibreboard cargo floor is not worth bolting anything to either. Definitely check what's done underneath before purchasing. I'd want to see all aspects of what's done to strengthen it all up... and exactly how they obtain a proper fix to the vehicle bodywork.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: 7 Seat Upgrade, has anyone done this?

Agree with Steve, the tie down points are VERY weak. This must, I imagine, bolt into the metal body, somewhere, somehow. It would have to be, with the ADR approval.

If you need the space, I like the idea. As for where to carry luggage, that can go on a roof rack or into what I like to call a "torpedo" - a space case mounted to the roof, like the Yakima cargo boxes (https://www.yakima.com/catalogsearch...t/?q=cargo+box). To me the narrow ones look like a photon torpedo from Star Trek, so I just call mine the torpedo.

The best way I've found to securely strap luggage/gear on a roof rack is with ratchet straps, or "come along" straps, like these: Ratchet Straps w/ 1-1/2" Heavyweight Polypropylene

But, that is a roof rack discussion and this is about the third row seat. A great idea, for smaller tikes. My 3 kids are all grown, and no grandkids on the radar yet...

Re: 7 Seat Upgrade, has anyone done this?

Here is the ADR 3/03 regulation that is linked to from that seat manufacturer site: https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2007C00114

It specifies seat anchorage requirements.

Re: 7 Seat Upgrade, has anyone done this?

My guess is that there's a subframe installed under the floor, around the spare wheel. There's only one way to attach that kind of thing, and that is drilling the floorpan.

FWIW I've had a very good look at the boot floor area, and there is quite simply nothing substantial... other than the single stud for retaining the spare wheel. I was pretty disappointed...

Cheers,
Steve

Hey Peeps,

Thanks for the input on the tie downs I've never had a good look at these yet, I'll be look into the strength of the tie down points and compare these to the front seat mounts, Should they be in metal of less thinkness and or less support it may not be worth the risk.
