Interpret "Sealed for Life" as for the life of the warranty. If frequently towing I'd get it done at 100k and every 50k after that as only about 50% of the oil gets changed when they drop the pan. If not towing, then 1st at 150k and then every 75k after that.
But of course that only applies if you plan to keep the vehicle long term.
Be prepared for sticker shock: the pan and filter are one unit and go for $300+ USD. And then you still have to purchase the fluid. Part number 68235275AA for the pan/filter
My other vehicle has a ZF trans. I found an accredited ZF auto specialist and had them do the work rather than the dealer. Saved a couple of hundred dollars. Just be sure that whoever does the service, that they use only the genuine specified ZF fluid. Very important. If they are ZF specialists, it won't be an issue.
The transmission has just been serviced by Murchison's Jeep in Brisbane QLD.
I'm glad I did get it done.
Sealed for life is bullshit!
At 97,860km, the oils in the transmission was almost black.
The four magnets in the transmission sump were covered in a grey metallic slime, more than likely from the friction plates.
If you use your Jeep GC CRD for predominately towing, like I do, I'd suggest the transmission be serviced every 70 to 80,000km.
A service kit from Chrysler Jeep is $1,600. Includes sump, gaskets and oil (liquid gold).
My 100,000km service cost $2,020.
If I still have this car at 170,000km, I'll get the transmission done again.
I believe the current model with the 5 year, 100,000km warranty, is the reason for "sealed for life". Once the warranty has expired, you are on your own. When I bought my MY14, A Jeep Service centre told me the transmission was scheduled for a service at 100,000km. Now the dealers don't say that!
