Acceleration/Launch Delay

When i was driving the CRD Laredo and Limited at the Dealership, i noticed that when i was starting from a stop and i just slammed the throttle down, there was a good second or so delay before the car actually picked up and took off. Same sort of thing happened when i was travelling along the road and all of a sudden accelerated hard. All times the car was in "Sport" mode.

Is this a common thing with the Jeeps and the CRDs? Is it fixable? How? :)

Cheers

Try fitting a after market chip. Worked on my diesel. Also remove rear mufflers from diesel which help in throttle response. Alternative keep left foot on brake and have a few revs on board at the lights....gone like sh-t of a shovel hehe. :slapfight:

It's called turbo lag. It is common with all turbo powered vehicles but more noticeable in some depending on the boost range and at what revs this is generated. As The turbo spools up it provides more boost so Bing is correct in saying holding higher revs at the lights will reduce the lag. I must say the lag is much more noticeable than in my current 120 series prado but the tradeoff is once the boost is applied the jeep is much more powerful. Also is suggest when overtaking manually shifting down before planting the foot as this will also put you in the turbo sweet spot. I'm hoping once the car is run in and the computer gets used to your driving style this will also get better.

Its not really turbo lag, well it may be turbo lag + Auto + diesel etc all put together. I have had other turbo cars with higher boost thresholds etc, so i know its not just that. Probably also me needing to get used to an auto, never owned one, only manuals.

Oh well ill see how it goes when i actually get mine :) hopefully January

As for the chip.. keeping my eye out for info on chips for the new CRD engines, hopefully a good one will be available soon for a decent price.

You are right it is not turbo lag. it is an inbuilt electronic hesitation especially from dead stop and can be scary if you want to cross an intersection quick so you don't get cleaned up by another car. It does not instill confidence in the car when this happens. I have installed a chip (easychip) from the Uk and removed the rear mufflers from my diesel and it improves the response greatly. Remember that the go pedal is fly by wire and is operated by computers and sensors.

I believe it's all electronic when it comes to the WK2. With some mods and a good tune, the delay in throttle response will be eliminated.

many turbo cars (Saturn Sky Redline/Pontiac Solstice GXP) the factory purposefully inserts some lag in first gear to avoid tire slippage, some even bleed off some boost. If you buy a chip it will remove this "nanny" feature.

If it really is turbo lag, which usually only happens with big ass turbos and lame non-dual entry turbos (old tech) then you can compensate by removing backpressure (install free flowing exhaust, downpipe, remove cat etc).
