Re: Anyone tuned a CRD yet?

I'll be doing it for longevity purposes as oil vapor that gets in to the inlet tracts eventually condenses and then bakes on and can screw up inlet valves, turbos, egr valves etc. If you're considering long term ownership, it's worthwhile and not too expensive.

Here are some photos, there is a spare bolt hole just above the A/C compressor, made up my own bracket out of mild steel, I think it was 25x3mm flat bar

The can came with plastic hose fittings so I replaced them with brass

I've got about 4000km till the 30,000km service so will see how much it catches in that time.

Yoda, thanks for the pictures. I tried finding it on ebay but no luck. You wouldn't happen to have a link or ebay seller name.

thanks in advance.

Re: Anyone tuned a CRD yet?

For anyone who doesn't know please be careful when buying your catch can that it has the ability to actually remove the oil from the air. Some of the cheap ones just run a hose in one side and straight out the other and do nothing. Yoda's can look okay just been looking at them on ebay.

btw extrememly happy with the fuel economy of the 3L CRD so far, did 200km a few days ago mostly highway on cruise control but some 50km/h town stuff averaged 7.7l/100, I hope the gauge in the dash is accurate, very happy so far with 800km's.

The billet tech can has 3 chambers, the top 2 where the hose fittings are packed very full of a stainless wool , air flow is through the bottom to get from/to each chamber, one of the best made and designed catch cans I've seen

Hey Yoda.

I was wondering if it was easy to fit the catch can? I'd really like to put on my CRD, especially if it helps prolong the life of the engine.

However, I'm no mechanic and I don't really know which hose goes where. Is there a 'How To' guide somewhere or should I just get a mechanic to fit it?

Cheers,

Clarkey.

Hi Clarkey, the hoses are easy but at this stage there is no kit for our CRD WK2 GC's, so you'll have to make up a bracket, if your not mechanically minded I'd have a mechanic do it. Yoda

I have too. we tune fuel and air so a little more efficient than just adding fuel only

we can do a re-flash but that means (at this stage) ECU out. We need to bench flash to ECU rather than going through the OBD II port as we can with other makes/models.

However, when the encryption IS cracked we will be able to turn off the EGR system as well as provide a tune.

As a matter as anyone had their ECU reflashed?

Re: Anyone tuned a CRD yet?

i have to agree with HRTHSV, oil from the PCV in the inlet manifold is being cooked and its really a big issue. I looked into it a few years ago and when my car had 67,000 i stripped the manifold to see the manifold was 1/4 blocked by carbonised oil. It is not so much oil coming into the intake but the 400 deg cel exhaust gasses from EGR that cooks it. The manufacturers just hope against hope that the problems will occur AFTER warranty. Luckily for Mitsu owners the problems developed within warranty and there was almost a recall (for the number of cars going back) complaining of surging and lack of power or black smoke etc. I have some pics up on eBay for the Provent Style cans but I'll post some here too on Monday. You will be surprised just how much the manifolds are caked with this stuff.

BTW on eBay search for "provent oil catch can"

Hope this helps

Cheers
