Re: Anyone tuned a CRD yet?

Got this from the Bluespark facebook page. The white BMW 335D diesel twin turbo has the Bluespark Pro+Boost. The blue BMW 335i twin turbo petrol has a remap,

Does anyone owning an a '14 GC CRD in OZ know if there is an EGT sensor already on the engine? If so, is the reading available through ODB2?

Us yanks are getting excited with delivery of the first American CRDs eminent. Many are wanting the BlueSpark tuner but are asking about monitoring drive train vitals such as EGT, Boost, and Trans Temp.

Thanks,

bd

It certainly has an EGT sensor, or at least my MY12 does. It's fun watching the temperature on a scan tool. I've seen it go up to 600C up a steep hill to below 100C using engine braking down the hill.

Sweet, could you tell us what model/type of scan tool you use? I take it just plugs into the OBDII port?

Thank you sir! Excellent news. Is your VM630T motor "chipped" or tuned and was the 600 C (1100 F) while in stock tuning or otherwise. Were you at WOT (Wide Open Throttle)?

Stock, not chipped and not quite WOT! The thing is that while the engine temp varies little, as designed, the EGT varies widely. Up hill with WOT the EGT shoots up hundreds of degrees in a matter of seconds. Coming down a steep hill with engine braking, the gas in the cylinders is expanded and cools rapidly. I've had it down to around the engine coolant temp before I got to the bottom of the hill. It needs to get to 600°C to clean the DPF. There is no problem at all in getting there. A little old lady that only drives to church on Sundays might have an issue.

I have an Actron CP958. Yes it simply plugs into the OBDII port, no batteries required. They now have a neat little dongle like unit that stays plugged into the OBDII port and communicates with blue-tooth enabled devices ActronŽ . There is a catch with scan tools. Car manufacturers do not release specific code information to the public until well after warranties have expired. This is typically 5 years after first release on the car. So any scan tool you buy today will have no WK2 specific code information only generic OBDII codes. You need to be sure that the unit you buy is updatable. I think Actron is a bit slack in this regard. I have had the unit for over a year now and there have been no updates of any kind. They have just been taken over by Bosch so that might explain it.

On my Powerstroke 7.3L, anything 1200 or over is considered too high. The VM630T's turbo and exhaust valves must be built to withstand higher EGTs. I would love to know what the safe limits are on the VM630T.

This looks really cool:

Amazon.com: ScanGauge II Ultra Compact 3-in-1 Automotive Computer with Customizable Real-Time Fuel Economy Digital Gauges: Automotive

Can mount it in the lower area by the SD card slot or in the glove compartment or something and pull up like all sensors in real time. Also highly rated. Think I am going to order it.

I have one and like it. I'd recommend it. I vaguely recall they had a diesel specific one but I could be misremembering.

I just checked. The diesel specific version is for vehicles without OBD2. Since the JGC has OBD2 I'd assume the standard scangauge2 works just fine. One nice feature is you can program it to run queries that are vehicle specific if you know the proper code for what you want.

Ya, I saw that it can pretty much pull up and monitor anything in real time. Although, say I wanted to view the EGT, where would I get the code to program in?

Ross51 is on a distinguished road
Question to BobT re EGT measurement. I have a MY 2012 but according to the unit I use ( GoPoint BT) and using Dash Command the EGT is not supported on the Jeep? Are you referring to the Catalyst Temp? ( note... Not trying to be smart but genuinely puzzled as I have thought I could not directly read EGT with my vehicle). Looking for info as I currently have removed tuning box because I have some concern re EGT with towing especially. Thanks
