Re: Anyone tuned a CRD yet?

Haven't found a 4WD capable Dyno near me so i'll just use the figures from the "Torque" app. At least this'll give me a frame of reference with current baseline 432Nm and 159kw.
I was thinking of you and how you fared after Marcia. I hope you didn't take any damage??

We were lucky but poor Yepoon copped it.

Roads are still cut at present but should be clear to get to you soon :-)

I've been fitting pedal module's with the remap and man do they respond well, it's like driving a petrol v8.

Re: Anyone tuned a CRD yet?

Just fitted the Bluespark. It's not that difficult but fiddly if you are a perfectionist nerd. I left it set on the default setting C5. There are 6 maps to choose (ABCD&E) ranging from economy, torque to power. For each map there is an intensity dial ranging from 0(off) to 10(max). So with C5 I'm right in the middle of the diddle. It's not exactly Wow, Kapow, Varooom but close. It feels more like one has just had a de-coke, valve grind and re-bore. There seems to be a slight hint of roughness. It's early days yet. I'll need time for the euphoria to wear off before making a proper judgment.

The Bluespark comes with a soft cloth bag. I thought it was just a bit of promotional bling but I asked and apparently they expect you to leave it on even when installed in the car... weird!

Also, Bluespark have a blanking plug that they are happy to sell for 3+P&P. The plug supposedly shorts the harness putting the car back to normal. This sounds much easier than disconnecting and reconnecting all those horrible electrical connectors. There are four to do with the pro+boost. I don't know about you but everything with a plastic lug, lever or knob breaks in my hands.

Re: Anyone tuned a CRD yet?

OK now I'm scared. The 2011-13 GC's have the 5-speed Merc NAG1/W5A580 gearbox rated at a torque throughput of 580Nm. The standard engine puts out 177kW of power and 550Nm of torque. With the Bluespark pro+boost it supposedly produces 230kW and 696Nm. OK, I've got mine set at the default setting which is half way so I figure I should be pretty right provided I take it easy. Then I go to the bottom of the Bluespark page and read, "Tuning box performance figures are stated at the default settings...". Oops!

The saving grace is that Bluespark figures are surely optimistic. Also the 580Nm rating of the box is a continuous working load. The peak load capability would be much higher (I don't intend to test it).

Another thing that gives me a little more confidence is that Jaguar chose to use the W5A580 gearbox in their 4.0L supercharged V8 XKR producing 280kW and 525Nm. The naturally aspirated version used a ZF 5-speeder but when they went to 4.2L they used the ZF 6-speeder.

Re: Anyone tuned a CRD yet?

I wouldn't worry about the gearbox as Merc use it in their v12's (or were) as the 8 speed is not strong enough. They rate the 5G-tronic, which is the same box, as capable of 796ftlbs which is equivalent to 1079Nm.

Bob, let me put your mind at ease. Your engine is not making anywhere near the claims. Even on the maximum settings.

That was a variation of the box, there were several iterations depending on the torque requirement.

Thanks for the review, Ive been considering a Bluespark for my US spec Ecodiesel. Some other members reported trial and error process and landing on E7 as the best mix of HP and Torque...

Re: Anyone tuned a CRD yet?

Took the Jeep to Stockton Beach to see what the Bluespark can do. I took on that big dune that the guys that were on the sand driving course know. From memory, at the time we all got up it in one or two goes. This time the sand seemed softer. I had four people on board and tyre pressure of 16psi. I had a few goes but couldn't get up it but almost one time. I think I could have made it with a bigger run up and maybe lower pressure... and two less passengers. The limiting factor before was that without a big enough run up, the engine would run out of puff. Not so with the Bluespark. The Jeep would get up so far then just dig itself four holes. Luckily it was easy to roll back out of the holes. So there is definitely no lack of torque. The Bluespark was at the default setting and I had the pedal to the metal. Nothing broke and no codes. We had a great day and a nice lunch at the Birubie Point Surf Club at the northern end.

Re: Anyone tuned a CRD yet?

I'm clearing out a few diesel modules that have been used for testing. Obviously they suit the 3.0l WK2 grands.

I've got 2 Bluespark pro's - $400 each
I've also got a mega buck one (retails for over $1400) which made the most and smoothest power delivery and connects to both the fuel and boost as well as cam sensor $700.

Pm for further details. Instructions included.

Re: Anyone tuned a CRD yet?

I bought one of Trailhawk's modules the other day and he fitted it for me on the spot.
He did a before and after dyno run for comparison's sake.

So far, very pleased with it. It is a lot smoother to drive but I haven't had a real opportunity to really test it.
