Hey there allypally! Not Peter Warrens - Suttons. Will have van in a few weeks, and will head off on a couple of mini trips to test rig out before main adventure. Will add to my list 'find interesting place for happy snaps'! As they say in the movies...watch this space! WW.

Wendy, dont forget you need to run the motor in before you hook any van to it.

Re: Battery capabilities for caravanning

Thanks, Allypally. I've done 1300km to date. Should add another 500km by the time I hook up, and will have had first service/inspection by then. Is that enough running in? WW.

Re: Battery capabilities for caravanning

2000klms on the clock should have done an initial runin. However, for another couple of thousand klms, I would recommend you do no full throttle's while the van is attached Dont be afraid to slow done a little on hills, and ease it back through a lower gear manually if necessary.
I can't wait to place an order for our 24-25ft Jayco offroader.

Re: Battery capabilities for caravanning

Thanks, allypally. I'm expecting I'll be taking it slow to begin with even once I hit the highways! I've not towed on the road previously, nor towed anything of any size...hence the towing course I've enrolled in. Pick up van from dealer and literally drive round the block to the towing course for one-on-one instruction In any case, will take it slow and steady for some time, I expect! I haven't tried out the manual gear as yet (still loving the ease of an auto after 25 years of driving a manual), but it was one of the aspects I was looking for in my towing vehicle - easier on vehicle and fuel economy...plus don't like sluggish vehicles!

Oooh, an off-road van? Now that's pretty serious, especially at that size! After 12 months of caravan expos, dealers and research, I'd finally settled on a 25ft Jayco Sterling - absolutely gorgeous and so roomy. However, I ultimately downsized to the 21ft just for the convenience and better fuel economy. Figure it's like a handbag...the larger the bag, the more stuff you put in it! Still, would've been lovely! Look forward to seeing some pics when you get your van, allypally! Wendy

Re: Battery capabilities for caravanning

Hi Wendy, congratulations! Nothing like getting straight on the road. I picked mine up with 17ks on it, loaded it up, piled in the family and went on a 1,000k round trip to fraser Island.

Not sure if you used the tracking service yet but as you are a level 4 member Milous will be able to give you the build sheet for your Laredo if you pm him your VIN. Well worth having IMO.

Good luck with everything!

Re: Battery capabilities for caravanning

Thanks, Mendo. Good suggestion re: build sheet - will do. Looking forward to my next mini adventure - only a few weeks away. Not Fraser Island, but I'm sure looking forward to getting there one day in the not too distant future! Cheers, WW.

Re: Battery capabilities for caravanning

Hi Wendy I am in the same boat regarding towing a van the one difference is that I was able to get a GC diesel off the dealers floor with QL fitted so no waiting, the dealer is fitting the tow kit and the red-arc electric brake unit I went this way on the brake unit as it can be fitted without intruding into the cabin area only a dial on the dash instead a square box near your knee. My only concern will be if I still need my Weight Distribution Hitch with the Quadra-lift.

Re: Battery capabilities for caravanning

Hi Dasher. I didn't go for QL - I thought it was really just needed for 4WDing, but having a better understanding of towing now that I've been on the road full-time, I can see how it would be useful. Still, I love my GC! Borrowed a Dodge the other day while GC was in for service - couldn't get back to my Jeep quick enough! The brake arrangement sounds interesting. I hadn't realised there were any options. I explained what I was doing to the dealer and they told me they'd organise the brake kit. When I took delivery I was disappointed at the positioning as I had to drive with seat further back than I'm used to to give enough clearance for my left knee. Auto-elec has since altered slightly to give me a little more room, and I'm now used to sitting further back (came in handy once I fitted the towing mirrors, anyway). Also, the couple of times I've used the manual slide for extra braking (eg. when pinball machine came flying off the trailer I was travelling behind!), I've found it within easy reach. Ideally though I would have preferred not to have the brake unit near my knee. Does the system you're having installed, provide a manual slide of some sort? WW.

PS. I haven't had a second battery installed as yet, but auto-elec confirmed that when fitting trailer plug he installed a switch of some sort that stops flow of power to trailer plug when ignition is off, so no concerns about draining battery from that source.

Re: Battery capabilities for caravanning

Hey Dasher, I am new to forum but have had my 2012 Grand Cherokee CRD c/with Q/L For 6 months now and towed 18" expanda over 4,000km. I have a towing sheet from Jeep advising WDH should be used if towing over 2,200kg on all suspension types.

Re: Battery capabilities for caravanning

I too have a WDH. I'm towing a 21ft van (total weight up to 3 tonne). Took van over weighbridge last week and it came in at 2.8 tonne. Didn't unhitch from GC though, so not sure if this alters the true weight. WW.
