Re: Closer look at the new 3.0 turbo diesel

The last 2 Lemans 24hr victories were outright won by Diesels Audi TDI's. The reason a SRT is not an oiler is because it would be a VERY costly motor to make. This is why we do not see any performance Diesels at the moment, but you can bet Audi will have one soon.
Diesels are not purchased in SUV's for towing, they are for economy and lower emissions. I do not understand why you think that Diesels are only for tow vehicles.
40% of SUV sold worldwide are diesel, this is especially so in Europe where it would be closer to 75% as the price of petrol is so high.
I am getting one for economy and environmental reasons. I also think it will be an easier motor to make faster, as it is a turbo and can easily be wound up. This will be my first Diesel, so I am taking the gamble it is the right move.

Re: Closer look at the new 3.0 turbo diesel

I'm all for CLEAN diesel SUVs and can't wait to see the diesel version of the GC here in Canada.

I was just at my local Audi dealer servicing my A4 and ALL the Q7s on the lot (7 total) were TDIs plus fully optioned. In countries where diesel is CHEAPER than regular gas, diesel will rule.

Re: Closer look at the new 3.0 turbo diesel

Diesel GC's sell like crazy here in Canada. They hold value too! I wish mine was a 3.0L rather than a 5.7L...

Re: Closer look at the new 3.0 turbo diesel

the issue I have with my current diesel WK is the lack of dealer experience in servicing due to the small number they see come through the service bays compared to gassers in Canada. Not sure I would buy another diesel for that reason alone.

Re: Closer look at the new 3.0 turbo diesel

From what I understand about te VM Motori, is they are expert in making reliable motors. They make the motors for the London Diesel cabs as well as Fiat's diesels, which is many models and many cars.
Eurosport, what are you basing your opinion on ?
I am yet to read anything bad about them and they are in the wild in Europe.

Re: Closer look at the new 3.0 turbo diesel

This is based on old 2.5 l & 3.1.l engines built in jeeps before. This one, 3.0 l is one completly new engine, V6 with two heads as difference to the old engines which have separate head for each cylinder.

Re: Closer look at the new 3.0 turbo diesel

Where I am in OZ I see everyday the retiree's in there new SUV's towing tandem axle caravans around OZ. And they are all diesels.
I would take a guess here most towing vehicles are for towing caravans. Not the big boats and motor-homes. Only in the last few years have we seen the big US "trucks"
F350 hit our roads. Before then most towing was done by 4x4 Landcrusers, Prarados, Landrovers all Diesels. Then the of Falcons and Commodores petrol (gas, ask for gas here you would get LPG). all capable of towing the average caravan around Australia. This is where the diesel SUV will excel.

Re: Closer look at the new 3.0 turbo diesel

any guesses as to the price?

I'm very interested in making a GC my next car. I'd be very interested in the Diesel because of fuel economy. One concern I have would be the price, which I imagine would be higher than the non-diesel version. Have they announced any price premium over the regular iteration?

Also, does the higher torque mean it's a faster vehicle? You don't drive a GC to win races, but any idea of the 0-60 time?

Re: Closer look at the new 3.0 turbo diesel

The 0-60 has been rated as 7.9 and 8.2 depending on who has tested it.
In Australia the CRD costs the same as the Hemi, so it should give you an idea of the price it may be sold in the USA.

Re: Closer look at the new 3.0 turbo diesel

I would love to buy a diesel because I will be moving back to Canada at some point, I'm a bit worried about the cold starting issues that diesels face in Canada, and Northern US. Can anybody set my mind at ease on this? I usually work in the oil business, and that is usually (for Canada) is Fort Mcmurray (northern Alberta) which hits -50 at some points in the usual winter. Is there anything that can be done to ensure a reliable start every time?
