Re: Closer look at the new 3.0 turbo diesel

I would have thought the diesel is better in the cold than petrol.
The diesel does have a glow plug setup for starting. It does not need it here in Australia, as it never really gets cold enough. The minimum temp we would get in the snowfields would be around -12C

Allypally, the problem they have in that arctic wilderness they call Canada is gelling of diesel fuel in extreme cold. They have to use "winterized" diesel. Even in Australia, I've seen diesels stuck in the Perisher car park during a sudden cold snap because of course we don't have winterized diesel. Some diesels shipped to cold countries are fitted with fuel filter heaters. Perhaps the Canadians will get that.

I like the better fuel economy of diesel engines, but where I live the cost of diesel is about $1.00 higher than it is for regular gasoline (today $2.92 for regular and $3.95 for diesel). That alone wipes out any potential savings of better fuel economy.

It's a rip-off. Diesel is actually cheaper to make and more environmentally friendly. However, most diesel is sold to large mining and industrial companies under very favourable bulk contracts. This leaves us mugs to prop up the oil companies profit margin. It won't improve until more retail diesel is sold.

Let's not forget the ethanol subsidy being paid for by the non corn fuels...diesel included. It's amazing that bio diesel can be made cheaper, cleaner and from more "raw" stock than ethanol yet the Eco warriors don't pound their fists like they did to get mandatory minimum ethanol levels in dino fuel. It's about money plain and simple...another thing that crushes diesel is the fact that people can make it at home (and the government can't tax it) without distilling alcohol. I will own a diesel GC someday...hopefully soon...people will say "that thing got a hemi ?" And I will politely reply over the glorious sound of a spinning turbo...Hell no !
