Re: Diesel People - Enlighten Me? (2014)

..I am driving diesel engined cars for abou 25 years now. Never had any issues with clogged filters due to cold weather. And I ve experienced the the change from the elder engines to the current generation, barely distinguishable from gasoline powered engines.

Why diesel? Its considerably cheaper than gas in gemany (15-20ct) and - my main reason -if your preferred speed is about 120 mph on the autobahn you have a considerable advantage in fuel consumption (..not such an argument in the US, though)

I have to gas powered cars as well, but hey are both about 40 years old, and i like them for other reasons (..who doesnt like a maserati engined car)

..and I will be skiing in Vail end of Feb, so maybe I´ll rent a GC just for a try (however, last time they gave me a chevy cruze instead, what a dissappointment.()

Happy Day

'Achim

And you won't regret it - the CRD is brilliant despite the doom and gloom the regular knockers are posting in this and other threads.
Those of us who are driving one are already convinced.
Once a few demo vehicles become available in the US for the masses to drive there will be a few more converts. In the meantime you could come over for a visit and get an early test drive here.

I would love to if it wasn't such a long and expensive flight. I told my wife yesterday if the USA ever goes to hell, we will get on a plane straight for Australia or New Zealand And i've never even visited!

Unfortunately they won't let you in,
You will need to go to indonesia pay a people smuggler for passage on a leaky boat
Throw away your papers
Australia will put you up feed you pay your medical bills and then relocate you into the community.

Re: Diesel People - Enlighten Me? (2014)

Chevrolet just introduced a new clean diesel in their Cruze for under $26,000 and Mazda is reported to be offering a diesel in its Mazda6 here in the U.S. as well. Hopefully with other manufacturers catching on, diesel will become more readily available (not that it isn't already) and cheaper.

I'm hopeful that diesel will continue to catch on, but not sure manufacturers will make them cheap enough to do so.

Re: Diesel People - Enlighten Me? (2014)

Diesel, get used to it! See, GM Brings European Diesel Engine to U.S. for Cruze - Bloomberg . They don't say who will be making the engine, only that it is designed in Italy and will be built in Germany. VM Motori don't make a 2L CRD but both Fiat (owner of Chrysler) and GM own VM Motory 50/50. GM has other diesel links in Europe so whoever builds it, there is likely to be quite a bit of shared technology.

You've clearly never driven one of those little piles of rental grade turd.

Actually, it wasn't that bad as a rental car. I can't imagine what sort of a masochist would buy it for themselves.

For people that want a diesel a jetta tdi was their only option but if can't justify spending at least 8k more it may very well make a diesel possible for them...I wouldn't buy one just because its a Government Motors car

I don't think I've personally made up stuff on this thread, I'm just trying to educate and learn.. I still am waiting to hear from someone in a COLD climate if these things warm up within say a 5 mile drive to heat the cabin or not.. Diesel cars I've been in don't do so hot at -15F. Anyone? Sweden?

There are a whole mess of - maybe irrelevant or not - issues with diesels in US for possible buyers. For example: lack of filling stations in some places, changes in temperature drastically in 1 month where I live, lack of knowledge of these engines in the repair shop (which in USA can be 160 miles from your home), cheaper gas engines, cheaper gas than diesel, little experience with diesel maintenance by owners who care to do their own stuff, urea and emission control regulations changing the perfect euro/oz engines... If you don't see these as issues, you probably live outside USA.

For most it will come down to cost / mile by about 100,000 miles. I'm not sure the CRD will beat the V6 for that, probably the V8.

I really have a hard time thinking a new CRD / 8 speed JEEP (of all things) will be easier to own than a hemi jeep considering, most importantly, reliability. If I overcome that thought (by seeing them perform in USA) then my next move may be to trade to one from my hemi (when gas is 5$).

I'll trade my Z06 for an R8d when pigs fly (burning diesel )..

It's all good. Can't wait to see them around.
I'm from Sweden. Have had 2 Diesels there (currently live in the US). A 2005 WK and 2011 WK2. In Sweden we use block heaters that either are electric, or run on diesel/gas. Everybody has them here, its a no brainer. You set a timer and every morning you take off for work the car is warm, no ice on the windows and the engine is warm as well. There are several manufacturers of these products, and you typically spec it when you order your car. Common is also public electrical outlets so you can plug in your heater. Most company parking lots also have them. So, we have the infrastructure for it. In the US, you don't, unless you plan to steal a plugin-hybrid/electric car parking spot. Webasto was the name of the product I had in both my cars. They have a US website as well. They make car heaters for both diesel and petrol engines. You can control the heater via an app or by text message. For diesels this thing is a winner, especially when there is no power outlet. So, in summary, there are two versions of these engine block/car heaters. Either fuel based or electric. Good luck.
