I just love how all these people are making all these "claims" about the WK2 CRD when they've never even seen one let alone driven one.
And to top it off those of us in Australia and Europe who have actually had this engine for almost 2 years don't know what where talking about and have our figures wrong. Get a grip!.
How about you try listening to the people who have actual experience with the CRD or wait untill it actually comes out in the USA, take one for a test drive and then make an educated comment.
Untill then a bit less dribble and non facts about the VM CRD would be nice.

I'm in the US and have never seen one or driven one but all my opinions are based off my research from guys like you in Australia and Europe -- and most of those opinions are overwhelmingly in favor of the CRD.

So it is fruatrating to hear guys like FAUEE bash the engine and act like its some new thing when the exact engine has been getting rave reviews around the world for many years...

This, stop wasting your energy with conjecture and just wait for facts.

Loving this new JG phone app, much easier to read the forums.

Again... why do we have to wait for facts when this engine has been out for 2 years.... Thats like saying we shouldnt be talking about the HEMI because the details havent been released yet.

The CRD is not a new engine!!

No it is not, but as per Yodas post; there are many North Americans on here that are saying the exact opposite of what the Aus and Euro guys are saying from first hand experience.

So who would you listed to, those that speak from a factual practical view, or those that speak from a hypothetical view?

I am supporting the view to stop making so many claims based on details you do NOT have all the facts on. You guys are not getting the exact same engine as Aus, and we (Aus) do not get the exact same spec as the Euros.
You don't know where your Urea tank is, or what it effects are among other things.

So as has been stated many times, wait unti it is out and actually test drive it. It is the only way to know if it is right for you. There is no way I would have considered it without testing driving it first. Once I did, it was a no brainer, I won't even think about the other two engines now.

The other thing I find funny is that a lot of people are raving on about how their 5.7litre is faster than the 3.0litre diesel, well you know what it should be it's almost TWICE the capacity!!!!!!
The fact still remains that in Australia and Europe the CRD is quicker than the Hemi 0-60miles!!!!.
Just another thing that makes this" smelly, smoke blowing, rattly, slow, unreliable " 3 litre Diesel just so good.
I can't wait until you guys meet more modern diesels and catch up with the rest of the world !

Me to ... unfortunately until they change the EPA regulations that WILL NOT BE possible. Also diesel fuel is more expensive (because of the taxes and other crap) here than gas.

Engine is NOT new but ALL THE EMISSION CRAP that they put on those cars here is a little bit terrifying. That's why I don't think you can compare apples to apples. As of now Jeep builds two diesels - US Spec one and rest of the world one. Because of that performance wise and reliability wise I'm not sure you can compare.

Also everywhere else price of HEMI = price of Diesel. Here price of hemi = 1/2 price of Diesel. I would imagine the 1/2 difference is due to all the emission control hacks they put in just to pass the smog test.

Re: Diesel People - Enlighten Me? (2014)

My '86 diesel RV has 2.4 liters for 6300 lbs and does not hold anyone up, the turbo makes more difference on a diesel than it does on a street gas engine.

That said the VM is really a low compression diesel at 15.5:1 so should be able to take a lot of boost into a larger combustion chamber. It does have a higher torque rating (see http://www.wk2jeeps.com/2014/2014_wk...ifications.pdf ) than the non-domestics. What really surprises me is this "Axle Ratios 3.45:1 — V-6 and EcoDiesel; 3.09:1 — V-8" I would have expected the gas engines to be the same and the diesel to get the 3.09.

What this means is that off the line & figuring 2000 rpm stall speed the diesel is pushing 420 lb-ft through a 3.45 gear and the Hemi about 300 lb-ft through a 3.09 (Diesel is at torque peak, Hemi isn't, same 1st gear ratio). Maybe this is a misprint because it really sounds backwards.

Like the old saw about the only thing that could beat a beetle to 15 mph was a man on foot, I suspect the Diesel will run away from the Hemi off the line. I wonder if that is what Chrysler intends.

Finally looks like the diesel package weight about 160 lbs more than the Hemi and over 500 more than a V6 Laredo. Interesting.

I'm not sure what CRD you are looking at man...

V6:
290 hp
260 lbs/ft

V8:
360 hp
390 lbs/ft

CRD:
240 hp
420 lbs/ft

Maybe my math is wrong here, but 360-240 =! 150.. it equals 120hp.

Same with the V6 comparison, the V6 only has 50 more ponies then the CRD.

And the CRD has 30 more lbs/ft then the Hemi. You combine that with more gears, and the CRD will get the most benefit from the 8 speed tranny of all the engines (hits it's powerband way before the petrol engines do).

Means it will upshift faster, and down shift less, all the while maintaining much lower rev counts.

The CRD and Hemi are almost toe to toe on the 0-60 times (advantage CRD according to official specs). Throw a fully loaded 6,700 pound trailer on the back and the Hemi will have the rev counter burried in the red trying to get up to merging speeds on the highway, the CRD won't...
