Diesel vs. V6

To further ignite the raging debate about which one is faster, let's look at the published data from Porsche about the Cayenne. The Cayenne engines and transmissions are very comparable to the 2014 WK2.

Both the V6 and Diesel have 8 speed automatics.

HP: V6 is 300 @ 6300 rpm, Diesel is 240 @ 3500 - 4000 rpm
Torque (lb-ft): V6 is 295 @ 3000 rpm, Diesel is 406 @ 1750 - 2500 rpm

0-60: 7.4 (V6) vs. 7.2 (Diesel)
Top Speed (mph): 142 (V6) vs. 135 (Diesel)

Conclusion: Due to the massive torque of the Diesel, expect it to be faster than the V6 from 0 - 80 mph (approx.). After that, the V6 should be faster, given the higher HP rating (and higher top speed).

The V8 should be much faster than the Diesel.

Re: Diesel vs. V6

The very comparable comparison between transmissions stops at the number of forward speeds. What makes the difference - and in fact the meaningful difference between automatic transmissions is not so much the number of forward gears but (in no specific order and certainly not an exhaustive list)
- the gear ratios
- TCU logic for shifting gears
- vehicle curb weight
- engine size, cylinder count, power/torque output and delivery (curves)
- aerodynamics

So really no. They are not that comparable unless we have all those details.

Re: Diesel vs. V6

What is odd is that the Touareg (which is a very similar vehicle and uses the same Diesel engine and transmission) is listed as 7.9 0-60 while the V6 gasoline is listed as 7.4 0-60. I think it is very hard to make assumptions like this until someone (the same source) does instrumented testing of all 3 models on the same day at the same location.

Re: Diesel vs. V6

Having driven both and owning a CRD, the Diesel feels much faster than the V6. 0-30mph I think the CRD is faster than the Hemi, as it gets off the mark very fast. I have had the Traction Control activate in a straight line in the wet off the mark.

The one big advantage with the CRD is that there is already a piggyback that will give it 30+% more power, this makes it faster than the Hemi, with better economy than the V6.

Its going to be closer than you think... at least 0-60. But really, who cares? I drove the V8 today and it wasn't that impressive. If I wanted real speed I would get the SRT8. I'm buying the CRD because it won't lose power in the altitude where I am and it is the best all-around value in my opinion.

Re: Diesel vs. V6

The piggyback box will probably not work on the '14. New transmission , more than likely new PCM. Given how hard it was for the previous PCM to get cracked, I wouldn't expect much in the way of tuning for some time for the 8 speed models.

Here is some info for the 5 speed GC's with each engine, just click on the different engine tab below the pic, 0-100km = 0-62mi.

http://www.jeep.com.au/features-a-sp...kee-powertrain

In short 0-62mi, V6 = 9.1 sec, CRD = 8.2 sec.
This is the official Australian Jeep figures
No way in hell the 8 speed V6 is getting any where close to the 8 speed CRD, fact!!!, not your never seen the CRD dreaming !!!

Re: Diesel vs. V6

As Carroll Shelby said... "Horsepower sells cars... Torque wins races"

The diesel will be impressive I'm sure.
