Driving in the Wet

I've had my Grand Cherokee Diesel for about 3 months now. However, yesterday was the first time that I've driven it in the wet, really wet conditions.

I don't know if it was ESC or whatever but it felt like that it was aquaplaning and the car felt unstable at times.

Is it the ESC doing something? My previous car, a Holden Captiva would do something similar but nowhere as bad, but I'd see the ESC light on the dash illuminate. Not so with the Jeep.

Or are the huge tyres (20" 265s, I think) to blame?

On the plus side the rain sensing wipers worked great. From an occasional sweep to flat out, to slower wiping depending on how heavy the rain was.

Re: Driving in the Wet

I would hazard a guess that it was not the ESC activating, I've driven around in some of this flash flooding we have had recently on Sydney roads..

A Captiva is not the same as a 2.5t jeep.. Also, wider and larger tyres are great for normal traction, the downside is they also make an aquaplane situation easier, the stock kumho tyres are crap, please remember that.

I get the ESC light when turning a corner in the wet under heavy acceleration, and the power drops off, and sometimes you will hear a clicking sound (the ABS grabbing the spinning wheel).

What is the scenario when you get the unstable feeling? Is it on the highway, stop starting, turning a corner, braking, accelerating? Is the front skidding straight on when turning?

Re: Driving in the Wet

Sorry, should've expanded on the driving conditions.

Major freeway, 110km/h (til I had to slow to 80 km/h for the conditions, mostly flat and straight).

Most vehicles were passing me.

No, that doesn't sound right at all. I have AT tyres, so hard to compare, but I would have thought that if other cars are doing 110kph, the jeep on new stock tyres would be able to keep up.

Perhaps tyre pressures???

Re: Driving in the Wet

Tyre pressures are around 2.8bar, which is about correct, I hope. Certainly, that's what they were when I took delivery of the car.
