EGT Gauge for VM Diesel

I want some advice as to the best, easiest, position to drill and tap a pyrometer for a EGT gauge.
This has probably been addressed elsewhere but my searches haven't found anything worthwhile.
I intend to install an Auber Instruments unit, had one on the Landcruiser and I really need to know what is happening when towing with the Jeep.

Thanks in advance.

Pete

There's already one, it sends its signal via the "CAT1" PID over the OBDII.

Have you thought about using an ODBII plugin and your smart-phone? That's how I monitor my EGT (amongst everything else)

Hi Scott.
Understood. Yes I do have an OBD2 interface and can monitor. However that readout is not available from the MY13 ecu.

Woops...yes it is there, sorry. However I would still like to attach a hard connection without having to monitor on a phone or tablet.

Pete.
Thanks for the reply, thought I was in the wilderness!!

Re: EGT Gauge for VM Diesel

Is there any room nearby the factory temp sensor? (Sorry, too dark outside to go poking around under the jeep)

Hi Scott,

I will get the Jeep up on the ramps tomorrow and have a look. I figure I should be able to get in fairly high up the pipe above the DPF. I am using an Auber Instruments gauge and they are fairly unobtrusive.
I am interested to see if you locate a better position. Thanks for the help.

Pete

Any luck? I'm staying at a mates place so can't put my rig in the garage to take a look, and it's wet out from the downpour

Re: EGT Gauge for VM Diesel

Hi Scott. Took both underside covers off, made patterns for new bash plates and had a good look. I can't see any way of getting a connection in there without removing half the engine and panels. So I think it will have to be from the top. Either that or just have to be happy with monitor from OBD2. Will be interested to see what you come up with.
Thanks, Pete.

Re: EGT Gauge for VM Diesel

I don't even have my WK2 yet (on order), but from previous turbo diesel experience the closer the probe to the inlet of the hot side of the turbo the better.

I'm used to inline diesels where it's a "simple" exhaust manifold straight to the turbo. Correct me if I'm wrong, but V type single turbo engines refer to the connection from both banks as the "up pipe"? So again, right before the mouth of the hot side would be the most accurate spot as I assume we're worried about turbo damage?

Also, if memory serves me correctly, this generation of Garret turbo can sustain max temps of something along the lines of 950c? I doubt a stock ECU will run near those limits, even while towing.

I haven't got into the Jeep ECU or anything, but there's a reason it has an EGT sensor.
