Re: ENFORCER'S Oil Change Guide for a 2011 VM Motori CRD

Had SVM Jeep in Artarmon do the 10,000km service on my 2012 CRD today. Not the highest price reported in this thread but still a bit of a rip off. SVM give an extra 3 years warranty if all servicing is done with them, so...

Labour $329.15
Oil Filter $60
Oil $49.02

First note, the oil price is lower than expected for synthetic oil. I asked them about it and all they could tell me that it was 5W-30 semi synthetic. I questioned them I fully synthetic was required and they said yes, but what they were using was provided by Jeep and approved for the car - contradicting themselves.

For the $329 labour charge they have changed the oil, plugged in the diagnostic tool, 'checked' underbody and suspension, checked the lights, checked the brakes. So, other than the oil change not much more than a $30 pink slip inspection. And they forgot to fill out the servicing book.

On a positive note, they addressed some warranty issues. The tail gate was lifting pretty slowly so they have ordered some replacement gas struts and the steering was pulling to the left so they did a wheel alignment.

Slatz

I would insist on asking them exactly what oil they put in.

I would be concerned that what they put in does not meet spec.

The dealers would usually source the oil themselves, not supplied from Jeep.

If it is Jeep oil then ask them for the product code.

Alternatively it should be written on you invoice. Something doesn't add up. Maybe they put the Pentastar oil into it.

I'm with Swampy and would be straight back to the dealer.....the correct oil is clearly specified for the CRD - I'd be concerned with the effect on the EGR and DPF with deposits left behind, apart from what may be happening in the engine!!
Dealer attitude is exactly the reason I supply my own oil that shows compliance with the Chrysler MS11106 spec. There's a bit more background here - plus on other CRD oil threads. CRD oil on special

$329 for labour?
I estimate the following
15mins - Change the oil
10mins - plug in diagnostic tool and read output.
3min - Check lights
5min - Check suspension
20min - Check brakes (assuming they did anything more than look through the wheels)

Therefore, for approx 50mins work, they charge @ approx $400 per hour.

I had the same issue and got the same story about the oil. I found out later that they use Caltex "Havoline Fully Synthetic C3 5W-30". You will see the sticker on your window will be a Havoline sticker. It is C3 and MB 229.31 compliant but not MB 229.51 compliant. The only difference between MB 229.31 and MB 229.51 is that the latter allows 20,000km servicing but that is only if fleece filters are used. Since we service at 10,000km and use paper filter, I figured MB 229.31 was near enough and dropped the issue. However, I'm not sure if I want to go back there.

I have researching oil; specifically different spec codes:

Quote:
• Volkswagen: VW 504.00, VW 507.00
• BMW: Long Drain LL-04
• Mercedes Benz : 229.31
• American Petroleum Institute: API CF/SM
• European: ACEA C3-08, A5/B5-04
• BMW: LL-04
• Mercedes Benz: MB 229.51
• General Motors: GM Dexos 2®
• Volkswagen: VW 502.00, 505.00, 505.01
You get the idea...

The oil I use (Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30) meets or exceeds the following industry / builder
specifications:

Quote:
ACEA C2/C3, A3/B3/B4
ACEA (Meets Engine Test Requirements) A5/B5
API (Meets Engine Test Requirements) SL/SM
API CF
BMW Longlife 04
Daimler Chrysler 229.31 / 229.51
Volkswagen (Gasoline / Diesel) 504 00 / 507 00
BMW Longlife 01 and 01 FE
Volkswagen (Gasoline) 502 00 / 503 00 / 503 01
Volkswagen (Diesel) 505 00 / 506 00
Volkswagen (Diesel "Unit-Injector/Pumpe-Düse" - exceptions pls see below) 505 01* / 506 01*
Now, as with other oils I compared, I compared NULON. NULON has two oils of the same weight that meet a variety of these specs. The Euro and the Diesel Formula. Does the Nulon Euro 5w-30 meet or exceed all of the requirements of Nulon Diesel Formula 5w-30 and / or is the Mobil One ESP middle of the road enough to supply both needs? The OEM I believe is the Mobil 1 ESP 5w30.

Re: ENFORCER'S Oil Change Guide for a 2011 VM Motori CRD

One needs to be careful with how oil qualifications are worded. If it is stated that the oil is approved to say Chrysler MS11106, it means that Chrysler have tested it and found it complies to their MS11106 standard. If however, it is stated that the oil meets or exceeds a particular standard, it means that it is only the oil manufacture's opinion that it meets that standard. The oil manufacturer could say anything. It is only if the oil manufacturer submits the oil for testing that they can be proven wrong. There is no obligation on the oil manufacturer to submit an oil for testing and why would they if they had any doubts. Best just to bamboozle the punter with the "meets or exceeds" weasel words.

Thank you for this information.

In the 2014 Grand Cherokee U.S. owners manual (version 2)(online); it still doesn't show the diesel.

Is "Chrysler MS11106" the official oil builder approval for the 3.0 liter WK2 CRD? In the places here on oil changes and Maintenance information and schedules this information has not been shown. Including the PDF in the first post.

The only Oil I have found with the specific builder approval, (Chrysler - MS11106), is the "Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30". This happens to be the Oil I currently use in my "2009 VW Jetta TDI"(VW 507_Builder Approval).

Re: ENFORCER'S Oil Change Guide for a 2011 VM Motori CRD

In Australia the Chrysler MS11106 approval has been the specification for the CRD, but recently changed in the owners manual.
See this thread in the export section CRD oil on special - post #51
(extract - Having just taken delivery of my new Laredo CRD, I noticed that the manual now states a slightly different oil requirement than that which this thread has been discussing.

I quote " the manufacturer recommends SAE 5W-30 synthetic low ash oil that meets the requirements of Chrysler Material Standard MS-11106, and that are approved to Fiat 9.55535-S1 or Fiat 9.55535-
S3 and ACEA C3.")

When using Google locally to find oils to the MS11106 specification only 2 appear - Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 and Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30. I have correspondence from Shell confirming that this product has been reformulated and is no longer approved - despite still showing that approval as published in many places on the web.

Using the Fiat approval opens another avenue to go down.....note the wording in the Australian manual now......"meets MS11106" and "approved to Fiat 9.55535-S1 or Fiat 9.55535-S3 and ACEA C3"
It all got too hard for me - I've supplied old formula Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30 to my dealer (because I don't trust them) for the past 2 oil changes, and will supply Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 for the next.
John

Re: ENFORCER'S Oil Change Guide for a 2011 VM Motori CRD

Great write up on the oil change Enforcer, i'm thinking about selling up the WH CRD to get a new jeep. I,m feeling bad too do so, that my jeep has only done 34000km, and my wife loves it. I have a question for John47, i use Shell Ultra Extra, in our workshop for most stuff that require C3 spec oil for DPF,do you know what shell have changed with that oil, i will be ringing them to see what has changed. THANKS
