Re: ENFORCER'S Oil Change Guide for a 2011 VM Motori CRD

I just changed my oil first time- dramas were , Allen key headed sump plug way too tight, only 7.7 litres drained out even after two hours. Manual says 9.8 litres so whats the go here??? Replaced exactly 7.8 litres (Nulon) & measured exactly on the dipstick full mark. So either some Jeeps have a smaller sump or the book is wrong? I replaced my Sump plug with a brass tapered 3/8" BSP hex headed plug (cost $2.65 from local rural supply shop) Jeep wanted $38.60 for their replacement hex headed plug HELLO!!!. Can anyone elaborate on the oil capacity issue??

Re: ENFORCER'S Oil Change Guide for a 2011 VM Motori CRD

Did you change the oil filter while the sump was draining? Very important as the filter housing traps some oil in there that is released when the filter cover is removed.

The Oil Quantity in the manual is wrong (amongs other errors dotted through the manual). The correct quantity is 8.4 litres with filter.

Doesn't the original sump plug have a magnet in the centre?

The hex key type sump plug is not magnetic. I have one in front of me, and it is dead.

Re: ENFORCER'S Oil Change Guide for a 2011 VM Motori CRD

Magnetic sump plugs were great in the days before oil filters but somewhat redundant now. Magnetic drain plugs are still useful for transmissions.

Regarding oil capacity, there is also the oil cooler that must hold a fair bit of oil. I'm talking of that square silver block thing that sits on the engine next to the oil filter housing.

Re: ENFORCER'S Oil Change Guide for a 2011 VM Motori CRD

In NZ the official service intervals are 20,000km / 12 months. I have been supplying the oil and filter (dealer wants NZ$212 for filter !!!! I got six out of Australia around NZ$80 each) and I am purchasing the low ash 5w 30 Mobil 1 oil in 20lt containers NZ$340 = $17 / lt and the dealer has been charging me $110 for the labour. From now on I will change oil and filter myself at 10,000km and supply filter and oil for the dealer service at 20,000km.

Brilliant step by step instructions - Well done.

Cheers Chris

$212 for a filter? I wonder how they justify that!

Re: ENFORCER'S Oil Change Guide for a 2011 VM Motori CRD

Hi Enforcer,
Great read and pictures. Sure will be a whole lot cheaper than the dealer at $409.00 for an oil and filter change. Oh and a sump plug washer. No tyre rotation for that coin and shell helix ultra at just over $21 a litre.
Much appreciated cheers Greatscot

Re: ENFORCER'S Oil Change Guide for a 2011 VM Motori CRD

Note that the oil filter has changed for the 2014 CRD. It will have the same oil filter as the 3.6L petrol V6. See News: Chrysler changes V6 oil filters

More likely its the cheapest they can get
Not keen on Castrol oil previous exp was it gummed up a lot
I asked my Dealers Service Dept yesterday what type of oil they use & he told me Euro Spec lol
So I ordered 9x1L bottles of the Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 from gllubricants for $147.00 delivered, the Service Manager quoted me $170.00 for the Oil & $330.00 for the service minus the Oil if I supply my own so I am not that far in front by supplying my own though at least I know what will be in it mine is a 2013 model though build date is 12/12 so I am not sure what would be different with the engine from the 2011/2012 versions to warrant the handbook having different requirements for the Oil as in the Fiat specs though I suspect the engine is exactly the same so I am Happy to use an Oil that meets the Previous handbooks specs lol
As for getting the Dealer to do the service I have concerns though do not really have a choice as I do not want to void the warranty by getting another local workshop to do it & the next closest dealer is 200 k's away & I do not know if they would be any better.
Still $500.00 for a service sounds a bit expensive for an oil change lol
