Front tow hook thread -

OK - much discussed the 2012 WK2 does not have front recovery eye's/hooks. What is the thread used on the temporary towing eye?
I am looking at getting the right sized swivel lifting eye bolts as a substitute?
Has anyone else gone down this route?

Re: Front tow hook thread -

There is already a thread here.
http://jeepgarage.org/showthread.php?t=32051
In the export section.
The front recovery tow hooks does not affect the USA market.
The export model has the changed chassis and no tow hooks.

Re: Front tow hook thread -

Just found my tow hook in the rear tray today. I think I'll sus it out and see if it will be any good for proper 4 x 4 stuff.

Do Not attempt to use that "Tow Hook" for 4WD recovery. It was not designed for that purpose.

Re: Front tow hook thread -

what if you had two tow hooks screwed in with a equalising strap attached and snatched off that

Re: Front tow hook thread -

It's a risk. The whole thing about being unrated is that it's not tested or designed to be used for serious recoveries like a snatch. It may work ok a couple of times, but then again you may find out it didnt work after a lethal accident.

I have a view that two eyes with an equalising strap is a lower risk than a single eye, but I'm not willing to test it.

Having said that, check the photos of this Kluger recovery at Stockton using the tow eye. The eye actually held up, but they had failures elsewhere an did serious damage to both vehicles. Pay attention to the imprint on the back of the Landcruiser. It is an illustration of why things need to be done right in these situations, and to kniow what you are doing. Some really dumb things going in that recovery.

Re: Front tow hook thread -

There's all kinds of wrong in that recovery.
I took a work AWD Kluger along a sandy track once, probably got 150m and gave up, it was hopeless.

Re: Front tow hook thread -

I took my GSR Lancer (AWD turbo sedan) on the beach at port maquarie. Was having a hoot, until the sand got too soft. Ended up getting bogged at the low water mark with the tide coming in. Managed to find soem guys in a hilux with a chain to tow me out. I hooked the chain on in between waves. Big wave hit, car started floating out, only the chain stopped it going to sea with me in it. Got off the beach and the only damage was sand in a lower idler pulley (fixed under warranty).

All I could think about when trying to find someone to tow me out, was how I was going to explain it to the insurance company. the car was only 6 months old at the time.
The things we do when we are young and stupid.
P.S I feel sorry for whoever bought that car, as every time I washed it there was a pile of sand under the car for the 3 years I owned it for.

Re: Front tow hook thread -

LOL ... you're a good negotiator Enforcer. Getting an idler pulley full of sand replaced under warranty is pretty damn good.

Re: Front tow hook thread -

Hi
Just got a ECB bull bar fitted to my GC and it has two recovery points incorporated in bottom of bar little bit conserned about the unrated comment though.
"This bar is designed with two integrated unrated recovery points built into the 8mm thick steel mounting system, which can be accessed through the front of the bullbar"

Re: Front tow hook thread -

I read that too Shawy and am a bit concerned, but I reckon that this would be by far better than the Tow Hook ... I pick up my GC tomorrow and the Dealer in Perth does not know of any solution to the front recovery issue (I have emailed Chrysler Aust but no response) I was quoted $2,500 for the ECB Bar
