Re: GC CRD with 8-speed?

Reminds me of the late seventies.
Two top fueler drag cars lined up.
on with a six speed tranny.
the other with a two speed.
guess which one won over the quarter mile?

Re: GC CRD with 8-speed?

I had a infiniti 2009 FX 35 with a 7 speed and I have to agree. The trans shifts way to many times and was a pain in traffic because it would keep down shifting and up shifting.

Now I have a 2011 GC Summit, the 5 speed shifts smooth.
The only thing I do miss is the paddle shifter.

Re: GC CRD with 8-speed?

Those are all low torque cars, relatively speaking. Do a test drive of the Touareg diesel with its 8 speed trans and you'll see how smooth it is.

Re: GC CRD with 8-speed?

Have a CRD Limited with Quadra Lift on order, to be delivered next week. This is a MY12 build and dealer has no idea of any changes in specifications as yet but believe it will have the 5 speed.

Re: GC CRD with 8-speed?

I would hold off and wait for the 8 speed, it seems the only complaints I'm reading about the JGC is the 5 speed transmission and its lagging and hunting.

if you mean with hunting that it is feeling like it's chasing and inviting to drive fast because of high revving and associated noise, i have to agree..
i tried it for an entire afternoon, and it is by no means a cruiser.
i was really willing to buy as i think the WK2 is by far the best looking off road our there.
Jeep should have added a gear to the old 5 speed for this one.

Re: GC CRD with 8-speed?

I do not know why people are complaining about the 5 speed. It is proven and reliable.
We have had no issues, where are you reading about the lag and hunting ?
The lag is just the way the CRD is, nothing to do with the gearbox.

Re: GC CRD with 8-speed?

Looks like the arrival of the 8 speed coincides with the Maserati 4x4 based on the WK2. It is said to have a V8 and diesel version (like Porsche). 8 speeds are the norm in the higher prices off roaders these days.

Re: GC CRD with 8-speed?

The reality is that the first gear ratio on the jeep is too damn high.

If you go for a test drive and you drive the jeep you may not like the feel. Especially if you drove there in another car that had more agressive gearing, you may walk away saying that the pentastar is gutless.

My car has finally broken now at 1500 miles and the tranny has adapted to my driving style so it is not an issue.

It took me almost 3 weeks to realize how high the gearing was because my last SUV had way lower gears and every time I decended a hill I would manually downshift the tranny to keep it in no higher than 3rd gear only to find that it was already in third or sometimes even second gear. there was a few times I actually forgot it in low gear and actually drove quite a distance like that.

The damn car was so quiet and first gear was so high I couldn't tell cuz it felt like 4th gear of my last car.

The 8 speed should fill in the gap by giving us a proper 1st gear ratio and ratios that are close enough to improve accelaration.

Now that I have observed how the Jeep works and how the 5 speed has adapted to my driving I have accepted the higher gears and it is a joy to drive

I have discovered that the JCG actually handled pretty well on the country roads too.

Re: GC CRD with 8-speed?

A question...
but really the 5-speed adapts itself to the driver style? If yes in what consist this adapting?

Re: GC CRD with 8-speed?

I do not know much about the Merc5pd, but my Ford has a ZF 6sp and it has the ability to learn. If you drive hard everywhere, it will shifter higher RPM and harder through the gears, it will also kick down on braking. If I pull the battery, it will relearn and you do notice the difference.
