what kind of mpg do you get with the Touareg/diesel/8spd?

Re: GC CRD with 8-speed?

35+ mpg at 60 mph interstate! Around 26 mpg in mixed driving. The 2011 + Touareg has an efficient torsen center diff. All of my fuel ups are posted at fuelly in the 2011 section under e90diesel.

All things considered the JGC should come close to this #S.

Re: GC CRD with 8-speed?

I think too much is being made of the promised smoothness of the 8-speed. Sure, newer technology and improved fuel efficiency are worth waiting for, up to a point. I agree that the 5-speeder gets a bit clunky at low revs particularly if you suddenly change your driving style. However, if smoothness is an issue for you, might I suggest something other than a 4x4... like a Prius perhaps?

Re: GC CRD with 8-speed?

Did 480 Kms mostly highway driving got 8.5 l/100kms DTE says 628kms. A theoretical range of 1100kms on one tank. Who needs an 8 speed?

Theoretically speaking the 8speed with have a longer final gear ratio versus the 5 speed giving it a much better cruising range. For around town the lower gears will be tighter geared allowing the motor to stay at lower rpms longer which is a diesel's happy place.

Re: GC CRD with 8-speed?

No doubt it will yield even better results but my point is I think it's nice but not necessary.

Yeah, saving money on gas is an unnecessary luxury.

I don't even care if it's 1 mpg. That's essentially a free tank of gas every year based on my driving.

Re: GC CRD with 8-speed?

I think that the 8 speed will be fantastic.

My other drive currently has the ZF 6 speed which is a fantastic transmission and was a significant improvement on the 4 speed of the previous model vehicle it replaced.

It's not just fuel economy, its drivability that made the 4 speed look ancient.

I am one who actually thinks that the current 5 speed tranny is the weakest link in the JGC package in regards to drivability and that the 8 speed will be more like a quantum leap, rather than an incremental change.

I just test drove a 300 yesterday with the 8 speed and it was very smooth (unless I hammered on it then it felt like a rocket!). I've also driven range rovers with the 8 speed and they are also very smooth. I can only predict based on my experience that the 8 speed will be a great fit for the GC, especially with the CRD! I've said this before but I can't freakin' wait!!!!!

If the rrp goes up because of the 8 speed you're going to need more than 1 or 2 free tanks of gas a year.

I'm sure the 8 speed will be no doubt better than the 5 speed. I would like to see cruising revs down 250rpm or so but IMHO the 5 speed does everything I need.

Re: GC CRD with 8-speed?

i drove a 2012 BMW X3 with the 8 speed transmission and I was very impressed with it. The rest of the vehicle, not so much and I am very happy I bought my GC. The shifts were very smooth though and I would be glad to have a simillar unit in the GC.
I think you have to drive one to appreciate it. I was very sceptical before I drove one especially after the sales guy had talked it up so much but I had to concede that it worked as promised.

I just hope Jeep puts the correct transmission programming into the WK2's that will have the 8 speed. That's the big unknown.
