The CRD motor is also a great all round motor. I believe it is the best choice of motor, as it is the best motor in the range.
Well. If I could have the version that you guys get (without all the emissions crap), for the price of HEMI (not for 5000 extra vs 2000 HEMI) and if the diesel was cheaper than gas (just like in Europe and probably Australia as well) I WOULD GET IT IN A HEARTBEAT. That means IF I were you I would be crazy not to get diesel. It just makes sense. What is not to like? More torque, more mpgs.

Nothing against diesel, actually was set on it up until I saw the price tag. To pay extra for diesel engine, more for fuel, deal will emissions hacks to make it legal in US. This plus all the above and the fact that it is delayed becouse of some electronicks glitches related to tranny and emissions, I SAY screw it Chrysler and good luck.

Yes it sounds like some price gouging 'Rip off time'

Here in Australia,

Base model is only available in V6 petrol at $49,950.00
Diesel is $5,133.00 increase but no v8 option.

But the story changes with the limited and overland

Limited has a price difference $1,169.00 cheaper fro the diesel then the V8 Price for the limited diesel $66,513.00
V8 $67,682.00

Thats with basic paint non matlic paint

Similar in the Overland model

So sounds to me America does not you to buy diesels

That's what I'm saying you guys are looking from your perspective and we are looking here in the US from our perspective.
Let's assume that CRD is superior over V6 and V8. Is it so superior that it makes sense for me to:
- pay way more upfront over V6 or V8
- pay more every time I fill up (gas is cheaper here than diesel - around NY/NJ it can be about $0.30 - $0.40 more over regular)
- deal with all the emmissions stuff down the line
- pay more for repairs and maintenance (not a lot of mechanics know what to do with diesel and not many know how to deal with new emissions systems and how to diagnose it).

I was set on getting diesel but the initial cost was a nail to the coffin. I wish I could say YES and get the diesel. If you are in US it just doesn't make sense.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

Here are my thoughts:

- if you are debating V6 vs. CRD, go with the V6. It would take way too long to make up the difference. This is assuming you don't need/want the extra power.

- if you are debating V8 vs. CRD its a different story. My personal opinion is CRD. You are going to pay less over the long haul. If you live at altitude, no brainer -- go with the CRD. If you don't want to wait, get the HEMI. If you are scared of diesel technology, get the HEMI.

- One thing I have noticed is a many people saying that the CRD isn't worth it because of the high cost of diesel. Fortunately they are completely incorrect. Yes diesel costs significantly more than than gas, but the MPG gain you get more than makes up for it. The advantage in this regard goes to the CRD. So please don't say you don't want the CRD because you will pay so much more at the pump. With the HEMI, you will be at the pump twice as much! You pay more in gas with the HEMI than the CRD, period.

- Alot of people are scared of the urea and exhaust regeneration -- but remember this is going to be 100% covered under warranty. I personally will probably extend the warranty out to 7 years, which will be the max I own the vehicle. If there is issues with it, big deal, i'll take it to the dealer and they'll fix it.

You can't really go wrong with any engine, but for me, im going CRD all the way. Without hesitation.

This thread is almost 2 months old. Anyone who still doesn't know what's best for them either didn't read the the entire thread, or needs somebody to make a decision for them.

The only thing not already covered is which tastes better.

Diesel, hands down. With a little vinegar on your salad...

Great thread thanks for all the information.

I drive a ton of highway miles a year (25k) so the CRD makes sense for my situation. I also keep my cars for 150-200k miles.

Coming from a Nissan Frontier 4L v6 that gets a whopping 16-17 mpg on the highway, I'm drooling over upper 20s or possible 30 mpg of the CRD.
