How much of that $9K did you get back when you sold it though?

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

well if you add up how much more expensive diesel is than gas, all the fill ups i made, id say close to nothing, you pay more for the truck, and you get better resale, but its a wash, it all evens out. if i paid 9 grand less for a gas model id get 9 grand less in resale over the diesel. Im not knocking diesels, i think your taking it the wrong way, im just saying in the states, they really dont make it benefficial for you to purchase one. fuel is more expensive than gasoline, the price tags of the vehicles are significantly higher also. you really need to be a fan of diesel engines or need it for work, i.e. towing etc. to own one. to buy it for fuel economy etc, does not make sense, you wont get back your return on investment because of the higher fuel prices, and the diesel being a relatively expensive option over gas. like i said earlier, i own one ( a 2012) and i get 9-10 mpg city, my pre egr truck with all mods, turbo, injectors, trans etc got 14-15 in the city. The best fuel mileage in my new truck was 14.5 and that was driving from chicago to north carolina, at 65-70 mph the whole way without a trailer. diesels USE to be alot more economical not anymore. hell, go to dodge for an oil change on a diesel ram its like 180$! even if you do it by yourself its more expensive than on a gas engine. moral of the story is dont kid yourself you are gonna save a ton of money driving a diesel in the states. i believe it is because they are trying to push hybrids and electric vehicles...for the average joe just driving around town, it will end up costing more in the long run.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

Now I'm getting a bit of cold feet on CRD. I should test drive the V6 to see if that would be enough power for me. Not sure.

That's my thought process too - I figure that the purchase cost isn't really a factor, because that comes back when you sell it. It's just about ownership cost.

In my case, I'm going to give the CRD a try.

I have a 11 mile commute, drive about 15K miles a year total. I tow a 2500lbs trailer about 2K miles a year, a 5000lbs boat about 1K miles a year on the highways, and a 1500lbs trailer about 1K miles a year.

I was 90% sure on the CRD, but when they came out with the latest delay I took the wife to test drive a v6 and placed my order a couple days later.

Well, thats kind of my point, you will use it for towing trailers/boat. I purchased my diesel truck for the same reasons. I tow a 32' enclosed and also a horse trailer, and my house is literally 3/4 mile from my office. If I didnt need a tow rig, I doubt I would have bought it, diesel by us (chicago) is well over 4$ a gallon, and at the 9-10 mpg my truck makes it wouldnt make sense...at that fuel mileage id rather have a srt10 ram

The diesel is worth it if you think it is and it best suites your needs and requirement

Agreed ... It's interesting how people don't talk this way about other options or even the V-8 engine. It's worth it if you personally decide it is. Personally I am going with the diesel because I feel it's the best combo of power and economy in this class of vehicle. I like knowing I'm using less fuel and emitting less emissions for the most part. I like having the option of using B5-B20 biofuel. For me I deem it "worth it" for the time being.

Thank you very much for that information! It is an excellent example of the value of forums in enhancing communication and knowledge. I somehow had the mistaken impression that EGR was something new and US-only. I've put the Grand Cherokee Summit Diesel back at the top of my shopping list, even though I'd have to drive with the small part of the rear seat down most of the time. I could avoid that with the 10" longer Durango with captain's chairs in the second row, but that 10" would make the Durango harder to parallel park in the crowded areas I often visit for work.

By the way, my 2006 Explorer V8 now has over 150,000 miles and has been the most reliable vehicle I've owned in my 55 years. The only engine work has been changing spark plugs and a few coil units, and replacing the radiator and thermostat. It is a good example of all engines lasting far longer than those of just a few decades in the past. The automatic still works, although I know will probably be the first thing to fail if I do not replace it this year.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

Hey guys! You are buying just one car. If you were a fleet operator buying a hundred, then yes, payback periods are important but for one car it's rediculous. Given that you are set to buy a GC, drive the V6, drive the CRD and drive the V8. Forget what's under the hood, forget what your friends might say, just buy the one you like the feel of. Either way, you won't regret it. My bet is that it will be the CRD.

Re: Is the diesel really worth it????

Diesel is just too European. Next they'll be trying to sell fuel by the liter.
